Interesting... confirms the suspicions that it was less about Leclerc "losing it" and more about the setup of the car. In theory when the car is better, the Lec-Sai balance should shift again, though ideally they should aim for a car with a wide operating window that can satisfy both drivers.

I don't think anyone would argue with Leclerc or Verstappen there. Neither one should change their preference given their outright speed.

To paraphrase Sainz in the presser today; the car is far from what he prefers and is still very tricky, but he can drive around the balance(similar to Charles did with the SF1000).

I really don't think this obsession with handling balance is as big of a deal as is being highlighted. The car above all needs to be consistent with a wide operating window. That is what is most missing for both drivers right now. In a very narrow window, the car can be fast but its compromised most everywhere else.

Maybe they didn't mount the new floor yet.
it's already confirmed by formula uno that only sainz has the new floor mounted. But they deleted their tweet with an image of it. There are (at the very least) new floor fences
So Sainz is the driver #1 now ?
lol, I doubt just because 1 driver gets upgrades, makes them "1".

Ferrari has always brought 2 new parts for the cars whenever they upgraded. If this floor has been in the works forever and was tested over 1 month ago in Fiorano then they will have one for each at minimum, plus spares.
Of course. It's just for A/B testing in FP1.

Not once this year Ferrari has done this. Both drivers will get the new floor.

Indeed. There's no doubt an advantage to getting to run the upgrades from the beginning of the weekend though.

Sure, you're probably doing more aero mapping work with the new floor but you also can work on the setup immediately and learning the new feel of the car. The guy who uses the old components for FP1 loses out at least slightly, but that isn't to say the situation isn't fair at Ferrari: I think we've seen Leclerc and Sainz sharing these duties over the last 3 years

Thank you for the clarification. I cannot imagine it would have been popular otherwise.

You give it to your driver that has struggled with an understeery car until now since you are trying to fix that stuff. Sainz probably going to prefer the old floor lol :)

Interesting session. Clearly more setup work needs to happen.

Yeah Leclerc being 3 tenths off Sainz with new floor not ideal, but you know with new floor in A/B running they aren't necessarily going to run it in its optimal performance window. Things like suspension, ride height will be dialed in properly in fp2 onwards I expect if both cars use the new component.

As for the pace it seems good in comparison to everyone but RB

From Frederico Albano on Twitter
#Leclerc vs #Sainz in #FP1 : The gap is all on the straight and turn 1-2, then they are very similar in the turns. Carlos is faster and very "V-shaped", Charles is very "round" at 9 and at the hairpin. #JapaneseGP

Why are they using different engine modes? doesn't that make it harder to compare the two floors?

Leclerc has had PU failure that Sainz hasn't. Maybe it's just this
