By Dino I was meaning the Ferrari which was never actually called a Ferrari officially, but was named after Enzo's son who died before it was finished.

Found these on google images:

I should see it one day but it's a fair trip for a motorsport event :)
Yes, they want to pave it. They say there will be less run-off down the mountain, which will be better for the environment. As for it being quite the trip, it would be, but last year I met a guy who came over from Portugal just for the Hill Climb, so it isn't completely outlandish.

Here is an article about why the rest of the Pikes Peak Toll Highway will be paved in 2007:

And a course map for those who don't know what it is like:

Tom, I didn't realize you mean the 246 Dino because I did not post any pics of them. I know I have taken some shots of it, so I'll post some when I get back to NY. I also know I have some shots of the 246 Dino F1 car as well if you are interested.

Yes, there were actually several cars to have the 'Dino' designation. Dino Ferrari died in June of 1956, but before his death had come up with the idea for V6 power for a Formula 2 car. After his death, Enzo decided to have his engineers continue with his late son's idea. There was first the 1958-1960 Dino 246 F1, which was actually the last front engined Formula 1 car to win a grand prix when Phil Hill won at Monza in 1960. It also won Ferrari the WDC in 1958 in the hands of Mike Hawthorne. Next came the Dino 156 F1, aka the Sharknose, Maranello's first mid-engined F1 car. It won Ferrari another WDC, this time with Phil Hill, as well as the newly begun WCC. Next came the first road car to bear the Dino name in 1967, however this one was a Fiat, and came in Bertone-styled coupe and Pininfarina-styled spider. Then came, the 206 Dino, followed by its more powerful, but heavier sibling the 246 Dino. The 308 GT4 also wore the Dino badge for a time. Just a bit of Dino history for ya. :)

You seem to know your Ferraris.

We were still talking 'bout Pikes Peak right? :D

I got a vid which I'd like to share with you:

http://speeldoos.eweka.nl/alec/vidz/Cou ... tanen.mpeg

It's a very nice display of Vatanen's driving skills. Especially note he has to block the sun with one hand while driving with the other near the end of the course.

"Climb Dance" is a great short film. It really shows how impressive the Race to the Clouds is. The film is actually a mix of practice and race footage from what I have been able to tell. It also does not show the whole course by any means. On race day, the glare of the sun is not a problem like on the practice days when they start runs ASAP after sunrise. The vid is def worth downloading if you have not already.

With Pikes Peak just over 2 days away. I thought I would bring this topic back up to date and take it into 2009 :D

This year "Monster" Tajima is trying to break the 10 minute barrier, the record at 10m 1s! His car of choice:

The 2009 Monster Sport SX4 Hill-climb Special.
It's apparently better than last years car. All the technical info can be found here

His main competition, going from news coverage is from Marcus Grönholm and Andreas Eriksson in Ford Fiesta Hill-Climb Specials.

They're trying to beat 10 minutes too but lack of knowledge of the track will hamper that attempt.
Here's a short video of the Ford Fiesta:

The under-dog in the Unlimited Class will be Mark Rennison driving a "Ford RS 200 Evolution Ultra-lightweight" seen below. However, from their news page they've got engine troubles.

Another driver of note is Rhys Millen (son of Rod Millen former Unlimited record holder). He's in the 2WD Time Attack category driving a Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

Good luck to them all!

Damn, those drivers have some serious balls  I wouldn´t even dare to ride my bicycle on that hill.... Anyway, I really like this years Suzuki, it looks nuts! Would like to have that in my garage, I´m not sure if I´d dare to take it for as spin though

Drag? Whats drag? :p

Nice to see those RS200s being used, and here I thought they'd be wasted, locked up in some shed somewhere.

1000+ hp what i believe some cars have, that is sick, and then they drive on small roads and places where you cna crash 300 metres down, that is just sick.

Speaking of sick, the front air dam is also quite sick :P

All in all, a very ill car, dripping in sickness.
