RB20 speculation

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

If you look at the little video of the car being pushed backwards into the box, you can see the mechanic on the RHS sticking a cooler into the top of the sidepod near the mirror. You can see it sticking out while the car is pushed back as well. That wouldn't work when the inlet is on the underside.

Approx at 2 minutes:
That’s the rb19 being pushed back into the garage. Not sure why that is in this clip.

The car being pushed back in to garage 06 is the RB19.

EDIT: I'm not sure this footage is all from today, seems to be somebody has cobbled together footage from twitter and tried to make out like they were actually there.

Lol rb just never dissapoints, they always deliver something interesting, that most of the time work
It's the W14 with RB livery and chassis
 So if Max wins the WDC in RB20 will you concede he did so with one year old Merc aero?

Ironic jokes aside, and of course with speculation, resemblances to the W14 on the alleged RB20 make some slight sense. Ever since the W13 the biggest limiting factor for Mercedes has been platform control (porpoising and ride height sensitivity) and aero efficiency (itself partially a consequence of the former). I don't think they have ever struggled for downforce generation.

I remember clearly early last year Merc basically said "we put a Red Bull style car in the wind tunnel and it had significantly less downforce" (not the verbatim quote but I can find the article if we really need to). Red Bull already had what Mercedes did not, being platform control and aero efficiency. If they wanted some more downforce then there are worse places to look for ideas.

There's a solid 3 pixel of proof here that there is a horizontal inlet. And a very thin one at that.

It still remains to be understood what Merc's issues were. The Aston which shared rear suspension was a monster of a car in Bahrain last year.

I think this is enough to open up the technical thread.

Pretty sure that's RB19, if you took it from the video.

I wonder if this car will remain aerodynamically efficient. This is no RB18/19

I’ve faith in Newey and the team.

I will literally roll on the floor laughing if this turns out to be a zeropod design
