Why on earth would they run something that is outright illegal in testing?
Because they can and so they can evaluate if it is even worth fighting for this to be legal.

Merc and RB both running the "hot race" cooling scoops introduced into the ruleset as a result of Qatar 2023. They have no cooling inlet on the nose

I can imagine that it will subject of a request for clarification at race 1 (testing is not subject to regulations); I can also count 10 separation devices on each side plus the legality plates for the adjustment zone - these plates are only there because of the continuity wording.
Technically with the air gap between the adjusted flap section & the legality ‘wire’ there are now 5 distinct wing sections in that assembly.

The bouncing is back again, I wonder if the ride height was raised very early in the session and now it is lower?

The frequency was different though I think. It sounded closer to what McLaren sounded like in early 2022. More quick "skipping ", than slower "crashing" along.

It's not porpoising, it's because the track is rough, if you watch the onboards you'd see the Ferrari, Red Bull, McLaren and Aston's drivers heads bouncing up and down as well, especially at the end of the straight. And the only car you can hear skipping is the McLaren

Russell seems pleased with the W15, says it's nicer to drive than the W14 and confirms today they were just learning and not chasing performance and seems like that's what they will continue to do during testing

I would not assume that, if for no other reason that Merc's suspension is completely different to last year.

They will need to gather a lot of real world data to see how setup changes effect lap time, tire wear, tire warm-up, tire life etc.

The third and fourth elements are the adjustable surfaces. Technically, the third element isn't one continuous surface either. So this discontinuity will satisfy that loophole for want of a better word, I would suspect.

I got minus plussed here for pointing that possibility out a few days ago. From what I remember last year the forward facing nose camera only really sees the inward part of the wing flexing. If you remember how much AMR lost last year when their wing was flexing too much I think this truly is a performance differentiator worth exploring.
