Looking at this picture, the sideways 'S' appears to hug the inside of the cannon bodywork, which means it would block all airflow front of it.

So does this mean that this is a duct exit? Which entrance is it tied to? Apologies if this has been discussed already.

Was thinking the same when I cropped the image. We can't see any tube/hoses connecting to the area yet.

There shouldn't be any airflow in front of it; that small volume is all behind the monocoque. The surface with the sine wave edge has the main sidepod radiator outflow behind it, which combines with the centerline radiator as shown in that photo.

Edit of Diego Meija photo. The separation of horizontal and vertical sidepod inlets is clearly visible. It might be they simply connect in the main inlet plenum feeding the HXs (one of the current speculation options). Considered as either a two-entry inlet, or maybe as an S-duct that empties into the main radiator inlet plenum.

F1TV live feed. The upper nose inlets are still open. Seems like they will change the panel if they think they don't need extra cooling for the driver but who knows. In shakedown pictures they also tried this

There is also a tube running from the nose into the main tub. They just struggled to get the nose back on someone finetuning in fit is still needed.

Would be disappointing if they're just using that panel to add/remove the usual cooling inlet on the nose. While everyone was expecting a front wing innovation for the last two weeks. :cry:

On testing day one they had a thin flat panel that was bending as though to test minimum bodywork thickness for that part. Only one small driver cooling inlet is permitted on the nose and must be ahead of 50mm behind the front tip of the CS, but it is not mandatory. The two small inlets on the front suspension bellhousing cover appear to be in a free region. As such, either three driver cooling inlets or something else is going on.

Looks more like one of those “vanes” to initiate a swirl and re-energise the air in an orderly fashion

RB20 has a Merc-type pretzel roll hoop yet the installation of the radiator it feeds is different. The RB20 rad is higher up and farther forward, sitting atop the engine as compared to the Merc type installation which has the radiator aft of the engine and lower than the engine intake plenums.

Yep, so the weight is higher up, but the space it occupies is much less. Plus, it might be nearer to the center of balance, offsetting at least a bit of that disadvantage.

Very stable/undisturbed and controlled airflow in driving conditions.
2nd photo (horizontal stripes) shows how the thick lip is gently shaping the airflow.
