McLaren MCL38

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I remember that he was driving very slow, which is not normal during flow-vis test.
It was definitely intentional. He did a whole lap on the pitspeed limiter (100kph). It makes sense to me, the flow of air changes as speed increases. If you want to verify what is happening at low speed, you do a low speed flow-viz run.
wasnt that clutch problems related, that he did the whole lap in 2nd gear?
I doubt it. It was pretty obvious he would speed up to 100kph and then continue.

Yes think you’re right actually, the lack of paint threw me off

It's kind of one specification. Oh, I was getting excited.

Edit: I looked for a long time and found only one difference. The upper fourth flap, which is attached to the nose cone. One has the Guerney flap, the other does not, no other differences.

Is it a trick of the camera or do our intakes/sidepod look narrower this week? Compare to Ferrari for example?

Intake is the same. It flares out further but that bit of the sidepod is obscured. I do think we will see development in that area on the MCL38 in the next upgrade package, coupled with front wing and maybe some more sculpted underpod work

Sidepod cover is off, so it seems it's smaller. It would stick out more if it was on the car.

Expressed myself badly. The sidepod cover when attached flares out. It doesn’t run straight back from the side of the inlet. outwash management presumably. Looks like there is definite room to tighten up the bodywork if they can manage the airflow
