Mercedes has captured two senior Ferrari staff members, including its former chief designer Simone Resta, as part of a bid to strengthen its Formula 1 operation, Autosport has learned.

Resta has been signed as strategic development director and will work directly with technical director James Allison to push forward with car-related projects.

Also joining Mercedes is Enrico Sampo, who is joining as head of performance software applications.
Hardly ground breaking appointments. Other than previously working with Allison, Simone Resta is known mainly for being the guy Ferrari have chucked around the paddock to Sauber & Haas the last few years. Think Enrico Sampo is a simulator expert?

Resta is ronin, I’m not quite sure it’s such a positive finding a home at Merc; not at all sure about the other guy.

Either way, hopefully it’s a sign & realisation by leadership that they’ve fallen behind in technical competency.
Team ANTI-HYPE. Prove it, then I’ll anoint you.

Neither won a world championship, or was close. I’m sure Rory Byrne had a lot of involvement, not just Resta.

All in all, not ground breaking appointments.

the first didnt won cause AMG cheated on oil burning TD...and an agreement with other manufactorer (SPA 2017);
the latter didnt won cause RBR was good enought and cause a TD destroyed the f175.

Resta has been the guy Ferrari brings back to Maranello when it's time for a new regulation but otherwise parks him at Sauber or Haas.

The deficit in the high speed is worse than the w13 and w14...but faster everywhere else. Don't know if this is just usual Mercedes rhetoric...
Something something ________________ floor.

I think the mechanicals and the chassis this year are great, considering it being great in slow speed and straight line speed, and very good in medium. It loses a lot in high speed and the rear end nervousness is still somewhat there
Could it haven been a mistake in setup? As in the drivers aren't used to what this car can and can't do

Resta designed the SF71H, not the F1-75. He was at Haas back then. F1-75 was a project led by Binotto, Cardile and Sanchez.

Either way, he has designed some quality chassis.

Does Resta even count as a Ferrari staff member? He's been at Haas almost continuously for a few years already.

And unless the Haas are genuinely just phase 1 development Ferrari's, he hasn't done anything inspired in a while.

Sauber haven't had anything particularly great either.

Mercedes puzzle: one second missing on the track compared to the simulator

According to what was reported in today's edition of Il Corriere dello Sport, there is a difference of one second between the data that emerge from the simulator and what is then found on the track . From times of virtual excellence we move on to the disappointment of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton who define the W15 as an "undriveable" car even though it was made in a 'conventional' way, abandoning the concept behind the W13 and W14. Team principal Toto Wolff stressed in Jeddah that the fast corners are undoubtedly a problem given that in three corners in Saudi Arabia the Mercedes lost half a second . Gary Anderson even hypothesized that the problem for the house of the Three-Pointed Star is not having fully understood ground effect .
1s sounds way too much, but I can imagine them seeing up to 5 tenths difference between simulator and track. They weren't showing to be ahead of Ferrari in preseason testing and yet they were convinced of it. So they've clearly had some data missmatch and not even aware of it, 3rd year in a row
And they call it a stall. A STALL!

Bring back Mike Elliott and have him work alongside Allison. I am sure he knows a few things that can help.

No m8, listen to me: sf70h then to sauber, (alfaromeo by marchionne) back in ferrari in 2019 to design the car for the new regulation (2021 at first then moved to 2022) till 2021then moved to hass for the beginning of the regulation (2022)
he was a pupil of marchionne design wise (when allison went off) while binotto was the pupil for organization.

Leo Turrini wrote yesterday on his blog that Resta designed for Ferrari the last 2 "shiny" cars (aka. sf70h and f175)

https://www.quotidiano.net/blog/turrini ... e-c-5.8409
"Toto Wolff ha ingaggiato Simone Resta, progettista delle ultime Ferrari…brillanti."
Toto Wolff has signed Simone Resta, designer of the last ... shiny cars"

You might be onto something. Elliott fell to the Peter Principal. Ross Brawn formed the team poaching various people who had also fallen to the Peter Principal then in essence "demoting" them back into what they're best at: Costa, Willis, etc.. It's possible Elliott didn't want the demotion, but it would have made sense.
