What is going on at Williams???????????????

Post

What are Williams up to?

The French GP has to be their worst performance in years
BMW-Williams, 12th and 14th

The new aero package on the Williams looked about as effective as a barn door. Even though they have a works engine, the team are struggling badly. Today’s result will be nothing but bad news. At least they know their way round Silverstone.

Any ideas? They're all over the place this year!

Well, I went to watch testing at Silverstone a few weeks ago. They were using massive amounts of traction control; even in faster (aero) corners like exiting Becketts they had quite a lot of TC.

Coming out of Luffield they were still on the TC a LONG way after McLaren, Renault and BAR. Another thing I THINK I noticed was that the other cars still seemed to be "moving forward" when using TC, but the Williams did not seem to be making forward progress. Red Bull, for example, was using TC - but it did not seem to compromise the acceleration as much.

The only car with worse traction (IMO)? Jordan..............

I have no way of telling how good their aero is.

But, the way I am interpreting what I saw and heard is this: a slow corner is a corner that you spend a lot of TIME in, also the rate of acceleration from a slow speed is greater than from high speed, so any traction problems must surely compromise the whole lap time more than a tiny aero gain in a corner that you whizz through in fractions of a second.

Also, worth noting that the McLaren and BAR gearboxes seemed to have much crisper gearchanges.

There you have my humble opinion on the subject......... :D

When I was at the Canadian GP, I also noticed that the Williams TC was active for much longer than the other cars. It looks like Williams has really dropped the ball again this year!

I think BMW's announcement to go with Sauber next season has really lowered the Morale at Williams.

dont know if its true or a coincidence but williams seems to be moving backwards ever since sam micheal became technical director.. I feel that williams frm becoming one of the most inovative teams have lost their edge!!

Interesting, interesting...
How can you guys tell if TC is active or not? Is there are distinctive sound? Can you notice it no TV?

On TV TC sounds like (and is) ignition is cutting. I was in my friend's car when he was doing autocross and one of his spark plug wires got loose and this grinding sound came on; it sounded like TC. Of course it wasn't (he drives an Integ)

BTW I hope Williams gets in shape because they're one of my McLaren Grand Prix Teams and I missed the 2nd deadline to swap them.

Hearing TC on TV is not that easy, but being trackside it's very obvious. And being at a test session was even better as with fewer cars running together you could pick out the individual sounds. I would imagine in a race it could be harder to identify the TC with the other engines around.

Williams TC makes a loud "hacking" sound like a misfire.

The RedBull was a similar noise, but softer.

BAR as above, but hardly seemed to intrude at all.

McLaren, seemed very subtle - it hardly seemed to use TC, but what I could hear was a soft "bbbrrrrrrrr".

Don't remember the Renault sound, but I think it is BARish.

The Toyota engines make a very odd sound (hardly ever picked it up with the Toyota, but was very clear on the "non-stick" Jordans. This TC makes a moaning sound, where the engine pitch changes completely and then reverts.

So, in the above you are probably seeing evidence of quite different TC strategies. Williams, I would hazard a guess are cutting ignition; BAR/Renault/Red-Bull possibly the same; McLaren - maybe fuel? Toyota, the only thing I can think of is that they are cutting certain cylinders completely and leaving others at full power.

I believe that Williams have introduced something like 100 aero upgrades this season. If they are chasing the wrong problem, you have to look at Sam Michael to carry the can.

It does sound like the ignition is cutting because that is actually what is happening – ignition is cutting (at least that was how TC systems used to function).

Early TC systems were cutting ignition to only one specific cylinder but that proved to be bad for the engine (reliability) and that is why several years ago Renault developed TC that "cuts" all cylinders, one after another, in cycles. If I recall right, Renault’s system works by reducing the amount of fuel injected into cylinders - possibly only this without any cutting of ignition. I’m not sure since I've heard about that long time ago.. :-k

I heard during French GP coverage that Williams has badly calibrated their wind tunnel and they discovered it just recently. All aero work was in wane… #-o
