Knights of Spamalot, draw your swords!!!!

Post

I got an idea to maybe fix this problem.

We don't need 15 moderators on here, but let's give some users, and I volunteer, the ability to delete posts that we feel are spam, into a spam folder, that doesn't show up on the site. I don't want the ability to ban, unban, move posts, just delete them from time to time. Maybe if the users total posts are less than 10, we could kick their asses into obscurity.

Then Tomba could go through them later, and make sure that nobody is deleting posts that are not spam, and delete users that have spam in the box. If anyone abuses the power, they get catapulted. Hard.

There are a lot of users on here, myself included, that spend a lot of time "lurking".

It would be fun to delete these posts as they are posted, and not give the Google bot much time to index their spam.

I would be willing to do this, and I think a good number of the regs on here could be trusted to do this.

Tomba?

I wish to volunteer. Image

As lately I probably have spent more time reporting spam than doing anything else around here anyways. And for an unknown reason spam has been getting out of hand lately, so it has got to be controlled and eliminated as soon as it gets posted. It looks very bad for the forum and it's very annoying too.

Besides, 'kicking ass' and 'catapulting' sounds like fun.

Hopefully Tomba will give his opinion on this sooner rather than later...

i odnt know what spam you talking about, but yep, there are a few people needed to delete those advertising bots who post links about viagra and such lol, as it is getting anoying. Im sure Tomba is working on something to stop this(i think removing google bot will already fix the problem), but then you can consider this as a step before the 'large fix'.

Saying that you want volunteer in such a topic will look like you are asskissing, wich isnt the meaning of it, we all want to keep thes site clean, so if everyone who wants to be volunteer(i really dont want to say that i dont want to be lol) becomes a mod, we end up with idunnohowmuch mods. I think Tomba can choose really well who is made for such a job.

Well, thanks, Wesley. Why don't you send a PM to Tomba?

A great idea as long as the forum admin and overall forum mods are happy.

There has been too much spam on here but the site still kicks ass..

I don't want to be a forum admin type person..I lurk a lot..and am on here at least once a day..but I haven't the time to dedicate myself to it

I didn't know we had mods. I thought we were an autonomous collective.

Hi all,

very good idea this, because indeed there has been quite a bit of spam lately. It always happens early on in the GMT day, so mx_tifosi reports them quickly. Then before noon I get to delete these posts. Thankfully they are removed quickly, but it could be better.

With the suggestion here, I was thinking maybe reporting a post would hide the post from everybody until the report has been handled by one of the mods (or me).

Does that sound ok?

If you are able to add "report spam" button (so we would still have a regular "report post to a mod" against trolling, personal attacks and so on) that would be great. So we would have "report spam" button that hides post and "report post" for all the other purposes, that doesn't hide post.

When you report a post, there is still the option to choose why you report it, one of which is "spam" ;)

Yep, that idea sounds good, but then you have to make it work for topics too lol, those air jordan advertising topics are getting anoying.

I always thought a good way to do it when I was on the VNBoards at IGN alot a few years ago was to make it so when a post gets "reported" using a spam button 3 times, it would get nuked.

Of course you would need to have a Mod ban the user, or reinstate the post if it is found that it was just a case of a "Message Board Posse" nuking posts by people they didn't agree with...

But whatever. I tend to ignore them just like I do commercials, or website ads for that matter.

One does tend to automatically filter such things after years of forum posting...

could you not just limit users from starting topics until they have minimum 5 or 10 posts? or a set limit, say 2 weeks from sign-up before being able to start topics?

You so totally took what I said out of context. Tomba has been working on something, but as no solution has been found, and I don't need Nikes.

I started this thread to make the forum a better place, but you seem to think I am running for office. I couldn't do Ciro's job, I am not even handed enough. But I can tell what is spam.

Like I said, I don't want to be a mod, but I want the spam to stop, but since you never saw it, it must not exist right?

Tomba, I think your idea is excellent. Letting us report the spam to a sandbox. Nobody's posts here are important enough to not have the potential to be jammed into the box.

If someone is reporting someones posts that are legit as spam, the ACTUAL MODS can deal with them right?
