I feel quite optimistic before the weekend. I didn't analyze it like you guys but I just listened to what the drivers/teams were saying.

Norris and Piastri said we improved in the slow corners (maybe not to perfection but definite improvement). This is a positive. They also were not immediately dismissing challenging for a victory, something they usually did before. I think all of this points to the conclusion that they expect to be in the mix.
Sainz is saying the opposite, that they haven't been great in slow corners and qualy so I don't expect them to challenge as much.
So that leaves Red Bull where Helmut Marko said this will be their biggest challenge so far this year due to the bumps.

I think we have to be optimistic. But whatever happens, it is fine. The season is long and the process takes time. The team has shown that they know what they are doing and they deserve our support even if they hit a rough patch.

Last year we qualified P10 and P11 - this car is so much better that I think it has to be a contender.
Everything should be fine. By the way, there is now a moment when there are more cautious comments on the forum about expectations, and on the contrary, the team is more confident in itself than ever before. This is the most positive sign.

It's very very early.

Its extremely early. If Rusell can do that kind of time then Mclaren can definately do better.

McLaren tend to run a little conservative in FP1. No troubling signs as yet.

Our fastest soft lap was very lazy on the throttle, shall we say.

Is encouraging coming to Monaco and P2 and P4 right from FP1, in normal conditions. So "out of the box" setup is the right one and now, fine tuning in FP2. At least we are looking better than the RB's.

Well, some cars didnt get to the softs in time. Ferrari had better out of the box setup. Leclerc was 1 tenth away on the mediums, and that was his first lap out of the pits as well.

Piastris fast lap wasn't even close to a push lap.

I'm not sure where we'll be but dont read anything into it.

As per usual, it's borderline meaningless FP1.

Every time they drop 2-3 tenths to Leclerc on that final sector. Pretty much what I was expecting so far.

With a clean lap leclerc probably could have gone into the 10's,are they that close in the end?

I’ll be amazed if Leclerc isn’t on pole aka the win.
I don’t think McLaren are as competitive as they and we all hoped.
