Mercedes asked Russel to manage them so they believe it will last to the end hoping that the one on hard will box. In Monaco where you cannot overtake it is the only strategy to go for. So yeah long run as you said was the go to

Most teams would have done the same thing. There is no #1 driver. the lead driver gets to make the call...

Monaco DRS! Ricciardo (with DRS) and Alonso(without) down the start finish straight, their top speed is the same.
