McLaren MCL38

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Lack of focus by someone.
I wonder why no one is focusing on the new aero element at the front of the sidepod? Very interesting. If it does not connect with the floor, it can create a nice vortex to combine or support the spinning up off the floor. Or, just clean up the flow a bit.

Are you talking about the orange fabric, the material of which is similar to that used to make seat belts or handles for bags and briefcases? This is a kind of imitation nylon. Also commonly called slings.

These slings are used to make straps for bags and backpacks, some are suitable for molle, for seat belts and other elements of haberdashery and other products.

Always nice to see hi-res shots of the cars in the wet.

I'd not noticed before quite how much the front wing endplates angle outwards at the rear to push away the air on the outside of the wing and create a low pressure zone in front of the tyres that helps the loaded airflow coming over and away the front wing get pulled further away from the tyre.

It seems that similar end plates appeared from Singapore 2023. It is curious how strongly the lower part of the rear wing end plate is curved outward in the area of the brake channels and the area of the beam wing joint. A kind of imitation of a diffuser increasing in volume? Perhaps this allows for more intensive air extraction from under the floor.

I checked the photos from the updated Silverstone 2023 spec front wing, there is no such outward bend.

Edit: I found it. In Singapore, only Lando received the updated front wing.

Thanks. That illustrates nicely why it is hard to see, only the first picture demonstrates the angle well as far as I can see.

I was sitting at the exit of the hairpin this weekend and every time Lando was slowing down to enter the hairpin his car sounded like an airplane. He was the only one that sounded like this. I could not tell if it was brakes or if they were doing something different with harvesting on his car. As soon as he came into view you could hear a super loud whistle like an F22 engine. Oscars car did not sound like that either.

Could hear this on the live Sky TV footage also. I did not know Oscar's car was not making this same sound. Thanks for mentioning it
