Thing was, Max was way more consistent with his lap times. Norris was doing a fast lap then a slower lap.

Yeah so he was oscillating between a bit faster and a lot faster

As we see, Max was actually faster on some laps, and that's when I understood that the race was won.

The last laps had the biggest gaps, but hard to see if that's because Max knew he had already won or because the tyres had more degradation.

Anyway, it's reassuring to see Max delivering and winning even with not the best car and against a very good driver.

Perez finishing barely above the Alpines show that Max is really, really great, and the best driver on the grid easily.

When RB will find more performance, the gap will be bigger again.

Max was faster some laps because Norris got traffic in wrong parts of the track compared to Max.

If you watch onboards or go through last 10 laps telemetry you can see Max was pushing till last lap.

There isn't a more representative track than Barcelona - tests everything about the car except kerb riding. Low-speed, medium-speed, high-speed, straight, tyre wear, everything. The MCL38 has a much wider working window than RB20, has superior race pace on all tyre compounds, has superior tyre life on all tyre compounds, and doesn't seem to have any weakness.

Facts have to be accepted.

If someone still thinks RB20 is still the fastest car in 2024, they are in denial.
McLaren also seem more reliable so far. Norris is the only one to score in all races + have the least engine components used.
Max already had a technical DNF + spare partpenalties are expected later in the season.

The current form book also changes the math with regards to Max's inevitable engine penalty. Now they can just take it at a track where they know they won't beat Mclaren. Spa is no longer safe. That might be one where they need to try and get the maximum score.

Also, I can't help but think if they are going to have the upgrade for both cars in Silverstone, then there should be a chance to have one set of parts a week early for Max in Austria. Mclaren did this already in Miami when they gave Norris the full upgrade and not Piastri. It was decisive enough to put Lando in a position to win his first race. Perez should be towing Max in qualifying in Austria.

They should do it in Singapore.
They could be back in the game with a lucky SC or just do damage limitation. hoping that Merc/Ferrari will get the win, so point delta to Norris would be minimial.

I don't think perez's contract allows for that anymore

As for where to take an engine penalty.. they should do it somewhere where they don't expect to be that competitive relative to Ferrari and Mercedes, but somewhere that you can overtake. In terms of Singapore, it'd suit in terms of the maximum max could achieve is likely not much better than 10 pts. However you can't pass there. I can imagine a track like Austria would actually be a good candidate. Wouldn't be at all surprised if it's taken next week

People who keep saying McLaren is faster are blind or something!

Same thing as Imola! Verstapen opens up something like 5-10 seconds in the first stint and then he just manages from there to the end! Red Bull is at least 0,3 ahead of everyone in the race…

By the time they bring their own upgrade package they’ll be 0,5 ahead again!
You better go and teach Norris that knowledge of yours, because he said, quite emphatically, they were the quickest car. Maybe you slept during the last stint, where Norris was on used softs, vs Max on NEW softs, and the Mclaren was about half a second faster? :?:
Yeah and then go back and look at how easily Verstapen passed Russell and how difficult it was for Norris to pass him even with tire offset!

That was pace advantage that did the job for Max against Russell!

That's a good thought, and might explain the random 4th PU they took here in Spain. They need to be on the limit to take the penalty in the 3 DRS zone Austria.

To be honest taking everything into account it seems a very likely place for an engine penalty. I'm expecting it

Thats the Max factor. No1 is better in the first few laps. Perez in the same car was hard stuck behind a Haas in p11. You have to be decisive and not cook your tires. Max made it look easy, but it wasn't, as you could see with norris, a car that had more top speed than the RB even. Really shows the special ability Max has.

The best driver of all time. Finds a way to win every weekend no matter what the circumstances. Even when he’s on the back foot or a rival has a slightly quicker car. He has zero weaknesses, is relentlessly fast around every type of circuit, and is totally ruthless in races while also being in total control.

Austria is actually a good place to take an engine penalty: plenty of overtaking opportunities, 3 DRS zones, 70+ laps to make up positions....but there's a but. It's home race for Red Bull, second home race for Max, and you'll have an entire autodrome rooting for him. Will they be pragmatic enough to not care about these things ? IMHO they won't do it there if they believe they can have even a little possibility to steal the victory.
