I guess they were hoping for a late safety car, as the only chance to score points. The car was just slow though, Ricciardo couldn't even keep up with Gasly.

After the race, Rick Winkelman, Dutch reporter for Ziggo TV, said that he had heard from several people in the paddock
that Liam Lawson has a contract stating that he will drive 5 races this season.
Rumor has it that he will drive in the VCARB next weekend. Helmut Marko had already indicated the day before yesterday
that more clarity will come in Singapore about the second seat and about Liam. See the interview above that I posted.

Journalist: "Next week in Singapore there will be an announcement [about the second seat] or .... ?"

Marko: " Eeeh, it will be clear as what will happen."

So no announcement. We can see what will happen.

Dan made a mistake on his second run. Not saying he would have beat Yuki but translating a qualli win to an automatic race win over your teammate is a fools game. Besides since when has Yuki been faster in the race than Dan everytime he qualified ahead. Dan has finished ahead of Yuki easily more often than not since China. The team knows more than you and the graining seen was extreme and unusual.

Egginton:

"Daniel’s race started okay with the car appearing reasonably well balanced, but was totally dominated by severe tyre graining, leading to a significant drop off in pace and track position. He got back on the pace, but the damage was done, and it was impossible to recover without the intervention of a safety car, which did not come, so we boxed him late on"

"It appears we were significantly more effected by graining than other teams, so clearly there is something specific we need to fix ahead of Singapore, which the team back at base and trackside are already very focused on delivering.”

The car was not capable of points at Baku. Your assertion he would have been faster than Dan in the race is a complete guess and certainly not on trend with what has been occurring in races between them both on average.for quite a while.

Hard luck for Yuki, but yeah gotta watch Stroll he is a nut on track. What was with Dan's strategy. Just a boring nothing. Worst of all the car is just slow at the moment. Need some upgrades that work!!
I don’t know how the heck he did 50 laps on the hard tires! Crazy strategy, I can only assume the team were hoping for an earlier safety car?

Yeah seemed like a pointless strategy unless like you said they were waiting for an SC. The graining though was really bad, so add that to a car that wasn't all that fast and no hope of points.

it wasn't a bad strategy, I think. In case of a SC with ~10 laps to go, they could have switched to new mediums, while everyone ahead (apart from Gasly, on the same strategy) didn't have any of those left, and too many laps to go to switch to softs.

It was a longshot, of course, but the only chance to score points with a car barely faster than the Sauber.

True, if Carlos and Checo had crashed 10 laps earlier, it would have worked better.

However, Daniel had enough of a gap back to Ocon and Stroll with roughly 10 laps left, that they could have pitted him for New tires and finished no worse than he did.

He might have even gotten Gasly - it was around this time that he’d gotten the gap down to 9 seconds before the tires started graining again.

Ricciardo midseason sacking

September 16, 2024 · by thejudge13

Daniel Ricciardo’s Racing Bulls future in doubt: Could Singapore be the end as speculation mounts over the Australian’s F1 career
while Red Bull changes it’s long-term strategy – Daniel Ricciardo, one of the most recognisable names in Formula One,
could be facing the end of his career in the sport, with rumours swirling that the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix could be his last.
With 256 races under his belt, the 257th could be the final chapter in a celebrated, albeit turbulent, career.

Recent reports from respected F1 journalist Adam Cooper suggest that the Racing Bulls team, an integral part of the Red Bull family,
are “exploring all options” regarding Ricciardo’s future, with a decision possibly being made after the Singapore race.
If the signs are anything to go by, Ricciardo’s place on the grid is under serious threat and the Singapore race could be a defining moment
for his future with the team.

Adam Cooper’s inside sources suggest that Ricciardo’s performance, or lack thereof, in Singapore could determine whether
he remains with the Racing Bulls for the remainder of the 2024 season or steps down earlier than expected.
While Ricciardo has returned to the Red Bull fold to revive his F1 career, the team’s management are reportedly reviewing
his contribution and a change in strategy is ‘firmly on the table’.

The possibility of Ricciardo’s early exit isn’t just linked to on-track performance, but also appears to be closely linked to
Red Bull’s long-term goals and the promising talent waiting in the wings – New Zealander Liam Lawson.

Red Bull had a contractual obligation to secure a Formula One seat for Lawson by mid-September 2024, and it appears
that commitment has now been fulfilled. Cooper suggests that Lawson will be driving for Red Bull by 2025 at the latest,
although his debut in a Red Bull car could come much sooner.

I don't think this will happen in Singapore but when it is true in Austin.
Btw Rick Winkelman is a very reliable sport reporter. He also does the IndyCar races.

Monday 16 September 2024
Helmut Marko announced before the race weekend in Azerbaijan that we will hear more about the second seat at Racing Bulls around the race weekend in Singapore. Rick Winkelman has heard that we will see Liam Lawson in the car instead of Daniel Ricciardo from the upcoming race.

The call for Lawson's arrival is therefore growing by the second. Various scenarios are circulating through the paddock, with an interim change also not being a certainty. In Azerbaijan, Viaplay questioned Marko about the seat and the Austrian said that we will receive concrete news shortly. "We do have an idea. Wait until Singapore, from there you will have a clear picture," the Red Bull advisor said mysteriously in front of the camera.

According to Ziggo Sport reporter Winkelman, it is now known in the paddock: Ricciardo will not make it to the end of the season:
"I have heard from several people that Lawson is going to drive in Singapore. Lawson's contract with Red Bull apparently states that he has to drive at least five races this year," he shares his scoop at the table of the Race Café.
