I am wary of Merc and Russell. I really feel the car they had in Silverstone, Vegas and Spa will be the car that will show up in more of the races this season. Lando is also a qualy genius and strong stint runner. Charles need to consider being less forthright.

His response was about as bog standard as it gets for somebody in his position and with how Ferrari finished last year.

If you look at the other drivers doing this little f1 marketing exercise, you would see that they didnt take it so seriously and were very light hearted with their little chalk board. Charles answer comes off a bit fixated. He needs to loosen up a little.

I am seeing conflicing reports of issues with the handling of the car, even from Leclerc's account. Lewis is new so he really doesnt have an idea of how the car should feel relative to last year.

The team have reported successful testing. No mention of needing to fix or catch up a la Max and Wache. So I am wondering where did the negative view come from about this car having less load on the rear axle and inherent understeer.

Just from people analyzing the telemetry from Bahrain and “on track impressions” but really no one knows anything.

Q3 and race day should give better indication but even then people will say that Melbourne is a unique track and it means nothing.

There is a slight chance of rain for Sunday too so…

A thought I keep going back to is 2019 and how good the Ferrari looked out of the box in cold conditions in testing. While the mega engine (whatever the cause and don’t want to get into that) meant the car was fast in quali on occasion, it never looked as good as it had in testing. The cause, if I remember correctly, is that the amount of sliding heated up the tyres better than any other team in those exact conditions, causing the car to look better than it actually was. Those cold circumstances never returned in the rest of the season (since Barcelona in March is colder than any cold race of the year at the time ie pre-Vegas) and in representative conditions the Mercedes had a lot more grip (allied to only showing their full hand late in testing).

I wonder if part of the picture seen in testing comes from similarly cool, unrepresentative circumstances and McLaren’s apparent step ahead of the others is due to this? Better warm up in the cool was likely a goal for McLaren (as it should have been for Ferrari but perhaps not something they wanted to overcompensate to achieve, given prior issues) - and perhaps even the suspension geometry has some bearing on this, given Wache’s
comments on the kinematics - so it may be that the McLaren car is similar to Ferrari’s in 2019: the king of testing but not something that translates to a full season.

Time will tell and perhaps I’m clutching at straws, but I would feel more concerned if the Bahrain test had been in the usual, warm , dessert conditions.

The SF 90 simply lacked downforce in specific corners and the gap compared to RB and MB was so big that even in most track they couldn't regain the disadvantage in the straights. In high speed corners the car was actually ok, but especially in medium speed corners with high radius (i.e. last 3 corners in Hungary for instance) it was pretty much midfield level.
Already in the last day of testing, in the final sector, the W10 was performing significantly better than the SF 90.

If you come to that conclusion simply by watching the car in testing through nothing more than your monitor at home - on top of not knowing what the team was even doing with the car’s setup and what not - I’m impressed.
But don’t be surprised seeing Ferrari winning races and fighting for the title later on. The picture will be clearer 3 races into the season.

Having said that, @f1361: What you’re saying does make absolute sense of course and I was also thinking of that. These cars are so on the edge that everything comes with a trade off. A big gap in such cold conditions should decrease once we get to usual higher temperatures which these cars are built to perform best at.

Slightly related - did anything ever conclude from the “water in the tyre” claims from last year.

I don’t remember MCL suffering post claim similar to how RBR did with the braking system/bib.

I think I've stated like on at least five different occasions now that I've not come to any conclusions. I've been watching F1 for a long time and have thousands of hours doing sim racing, so it's not impossible for me to be able to point out when certain cars look more obviously better behaved than others. I cant know the whole testing program, but my observations were based on the whole test, not just some one off lap or whatever. The pattern was consistent. Does it mean everything? No, but it would also be silly to dismiss it as meaningless.

The entire paddock also seems to agree that Mclaren clearly have the best car. Again, does this mean everything? No, but ignoring this when all signs are so obviously pointing to that doesn't make sense. I dont know how I could reasonably dismiss all this without coming to the conclusion that I'm just deluding myself.

i personally don't care if Ferrari is fastest out right, just hoping that are close enough, and then keep developing into late season to get championship .
