Mercedes apparently was struggling with tire wear in the test, so they may actually benefit from that in the wet, I guess.

So no McLaren driver on the podium, that's a bold prediction. I think it will be Max, Lewis and one McLaren driver on the podium on Sunday.

If they weren't testing with a not ideal setup for the Bahrain circuit.

People seem very very confident talking about the new driver/new car pairing prediction of Lewis on the podium.

I didn't really see anything over testing to show he will be top three fastest in a race.

But to be fair I didn't see any evidence of anything from anyone because it was testing.

I'll judge after P3/Q3.

I think people are talking about if the race is wet(as it's currently forecast to potentially be).

But yea even then people just seem to be ranking who they think is best in the wet by order and not really considering that car still makes a huge difference in this situation. And Lewis will be driving the first non-Mercedes engine in his F1 career which will have different driveability characteristics and all. Lots of things up in the air even in wet conditions. Things are never so straightforward.

From the 'body language' of the cars, McLaren looks vastly superior to anyone else.
Norris, with a low DF rear wing, wasn't even hitting the white line of the T10 kerb at high speed. That means even more pace is 'in pocket'. I don't think any other of the top5 time setters had this kind of margin. And the commentary said he wasn't using the kerb at all, on the final corner before the pit straight. It's looking ominous, like RB19 of 2023.

It’s not ominous. If it was OP would not be 4 tenths behind.
Watching F1 since 1986.

The McLaren is clearly in another league, the fight behind seems close though.

OP was running a bigger rear wing => more drag. Even otherwise, I was observing the car before I made my comment, not by analyzing timing data, as I think that's a better 'tell' than trying to guesstimate engine modes and fuel loads.

If you think MCL is in another league after that FP1, maybe we watched 2 different seasons... LEC actually had his lap with the car with a much lower engine mode.

Image

Look at that back straight, on the onboard it even looks like he lifted mid straight, obviously LEC as well barely gets to the white line in T10. Lando also did his lap in the final minutes of the practice after plenty of track evolution.

Don't accuse me now of saying Ferrari will win and MCL will not, but that telemetry is not a car in another league.

The number before the compound is the stint length or the in-stint lap number for the best time?

One way or the other, this Sainz's time is not bad, in medium tire.

Not sure if he went back out on medium post-red flag but his fastest lap was set on reds.
