It could be the opposite, manufactured in light plastic by 3d print, mould made with that inside by initially spray surfacing, to then cast in something like magnesium alloy by pouring into the mould in displacement of the original structural plastic by melting.

OR metal fused "powder" in matrix construction.

Matt Somerfield stated that the drum "has been treated with heat resistant paint," so it's probably just carbon-fiber like the rest of them.

They would ordinarily need phenolic resin in high heat component like this application, to avoid heat problems. The coating, if true, suggest that the structure is vulnerable for some reason.

It is a heat resistant coating. Not a coating to make something heat resistant. Big difference.

To get the desired transfer of heat, engineers need to balance conductive, radiative and convective heat exchange. A reflective coating can be used to change the radiative heat exchange.

From an interest point of view and furthering discussion about the component here gives more oversight of a process that can be used.

One advantage in that original is relatively cheap to make a easy to complete finite finishing work on before it passes to casting. The casting stage can then arrive virtually finished as component with little work to complete installation.

The teams as I understand run a range of 3d printing capabilities in different materials and method to best fit the downstream output, whether that be final component or mould, for example.

Although we were looking at the material etc, there's possibly more to this in function that's not discussed.

Clearly there's restriction in heat passage through that item/coating etc. It looks to be separating brake temp from wheel and tyre mass.
Further, it looks to be taking cooling air from ducted entrypoint of brake vent/scoop to pass around inside the wheel's rim in clearly directed pathways, likely to eject residual heat via exit between diffuser wall and through brake duct exit.

Looks to be for wheel and tyre temperature containment at initial view.

Are you certain that's not the outer ? Yes I know the hole "saga" or projection, which was if I understood that correctly, a hole from inside brake shroud through the shroud to outside and apparently for sensors mounting when not under timed track sessions counting for position.

IF ... this was the whole shroud we see, but the hole didn't pass through it to the brake section, effectively leaving that sealed, then input air could possibly be presented to the rim to cake tin void without impingement on that specific regulation. Cooling can be changed at various times during competitive runs without penalty of parc fermè as well.

Perhaps we'll get more comprehensive view from this next buildup in Bahrain. Whether it will include an outer cover too.

I say that as the silver "cake tin" has competent rebated mounting arrangement onto backplate that holds it. That doesn't appear to offer anything else in tangible way to mount another cover external to it, and certainly in that proximity to wheel rim would need a decent integrated fixing itself in avoiding any interferance.

Hopefully there'll be something more to see.
