That seems like it would be very bad for morale. Especially for Antonelli who's still learning the ropes. Some good results will help him get his mind back on track. Getting a string of terrible ones would do the opposite.
Alonso did absolutley fine in a Minardi, and a host of other examples of talented drivers learning the ropes through a tough spell. If talent flakes at the first bit of heat, it's not steel forged in fire.

Funny seeing 'tanking' strategies getting talked about in F1 circles these days. lol

Unless losing gives you some undeniably fantastic advantage, there's usually nothing worse you can do than abandoning all effort to create a winning culture. The best teams are almost always the best oiled teams, where everything is just gelling and everybody is confident.
It might be funny to some but the difference between 2nd and 4th gives an 10% aero testing limit, 32 more wind tunnel runs and 200 extra CFD items.
That's an undeniable advantage over having less when being 2nd on June 30th.

Lap times seem ok and somewhat comparable to the others when accounting for tyre choice.

Ferrari seem to also run with more power on a Friday vs the other top teams which should be noted.

I would be hesitant to even be remotely concerned at this point.

four laps is too small a sample size for averaging, and of course we dont know about fuel loads and engine modes. IMHO, a 'long run' has to be atleast 10 laps to be counted as meaningful data

Russell’s soft lap was pretty good.

Normal service resumed with Piastri's lap.

Merc are a certainly decidedly in the bottom half of the grid across the speed traps, so could be some power differences going on.

Also Russell & Kimi straight into long runs on the same soft tyres, so was carrying a bit of fuel at least. Both Maccas back into the pits after one flying lap.

I just got them from multiviewer. Obvious exception to my comment being Russell P7 over the finish line on his fastest lap.

Bodes well! If the updated floor can help the balance of the car in not making it chew up it's rears over a stint, Merc looking much healthier. Will need to see it through to FP3 and what the drop off is.

Indeed. Looking at the lap times, they're looking pretty competitive on the long runs. Worth noting they haven't refueled as far as I can tell post fast laps, so they were carrying around a fair bit of fuel on that faster run if that is the case.
Based on team radio, Russell at least will have done around 24 laps on the softs by the end of his current stint. Looks more positive than 1 or 2 weeks ago at least for now.
