If nothing else he is a good looking plan B in the future for Mclaren if relationship with Norris sours.

The car isn't near the edge yet, being able to pop in top time consistently when the car is at the edge of its capabilities is what counts. it's the same reason Norris is typically fine until Q3
That actually makes perfect sense... The car is obviously good all around, any major change would probably take away from that balance.
