You all are forgetting that this movie is not for the ones that are already fans of F1 or motorsport in general. It is for the new fans, the ones who came with the netflix show and the expansion in USA mostly following the 2021 season finale. It will never capture the essence of F1 or why it made the current fans fall in love with it. It is just a new presentation for newer fans or casual cinema goers who have no idea how things work in F1.

What is this based on?

How are we 'forgetting' something that was never established as being true in the first place? I'd personally assume that their intended audience is ideally gonna be a mix of non, newer and older fans. Plenty of movies with established IP and fanbases are able to create something that doesn't strictly cater to any individual group.

This sort of movie usually has clips where they are going as fast as they possibly can, but the baddie appears in the mirror and suddenly they can push the peddle down another 6 inches
( change cam to footwell, and- stomp, big roar, tyre squeal and extra 20mph )

And of course, the worst trope of all.....there is ALWAYS another gear!!

I am hoping to catch this with a crowd of F1 fans. It is just better when people actually get the jokes.

So I went to see this last night in an IMAX theatre in Rushden, UK. There seemed to be a few screens showing it early.
Hopefully no spoilers here!
I'm probably not going to shed any further light on it than has already been done by others in the motorsport press. But, the opening scenes at Daytona are brilliant and set the standard for the remaining F1 based racing scenes. Unfortunately, these were not all as visceral nor engaging and suffered from too much music and banal commentary. I know it's aimed at people who know nothing of F1 and need explainers but it felt too much. Kind of feels like a missed opportunity. Maybe the TV coverage is so much better these days that the step up into a feature film scenario is less obvious than it was for previous films?
I'm not going to mention the plot/script or the characters.
Overall disappointing. But is that because I had too high an expectation?
5/10.

Oh, and is it me, or was the appearance of Fernando Alonso (tapping Pitt on the shoulder) at the end of a race where suspect tactics were employed just a coincidence?

ps. I was very glad to see a veteran F1 driver get a thanks at the start of the credits for using his real life story as inspiration...

Anyone up for a bingo card?

1) Car bursts in flames. - Yes
2) Two drivers fight for the same woman off track. - No
3) Rookie is winning races, fighting for the championship in his first season. - No
4) Two drivers pick a fist fight, helmets on. - Almost
5) They are cheating. I know because I am cheating and they are faster. - Not really
6) Drives car at full blast, on track, during the race in the opposite direction. - No
7) Driver tells engineer to “add downforce”. Engineer looks surprised. It actually works! - Unbelievable but yes!
8 ) Hero tells rookie which line to take in that corner instead. It makes him 1 second faster. - Kinda
9) Hero tells rookie where to brake in that other corner instead, it is a dummy, makes him crash. - No
10) A safety car allows hero to go from last to first in a couple of laps. - Not far off!
11) Two cars cross the finish line exactly even. - Almost
12) Two cars pass each other 6 times in the same lap, twice in the same straight. - No
13) Driver shows up late for the race. - Yes
14) They spend a good 10 minutes explaining downforce, drag, oversteer, soft tires, hard tires, undercuts... RTL is proud. - It felt like it throughout all the racing scenes
15) Hero sacrifices his one and only chance for a race win to make the teammate champion. - No

We know 1 to 5 would never happen in real life. But it is a movie!

I thought it was a passable movie if you don’t expect technical accuracy and come with low expectations.

Was that Joylon Palmer overacting as the voice of Joylon Palmer???

This is why I'll wait until it hits VoD. A friend keeps trying to get me to see it in-theater with him - "You gotta see it in IMAX, bro."

We did not do IMAX, it was a small cinema, but we both found that the sounds was subpar. As in no better than in TV, maybe even more subdued. Great camera placement in the car, but bad mic/mix, probably they feared overwelming non-fans with motor noises?

I will express opinion after Wednesday night where i will see it in a brand new IMAX theatre that just opened and they all say that the sound is incredible.

This movie is so boring and dull. It tries so hard to be realistic, but the concept just doesn't work. What's the point of inserting two fictional cars into a real-world setting? I couldn't care less about Brad Pitt's character fighting with Verstappen. Ford v Ferrari and Rush are great movies because they're based on real-life events and portray their rivalries in an engaging way. But this movie has none of that—just a series of boring action or dialogue scenes that barely connect. There's no suspense in the story at all. Even Days of Thunder is a far superior movie compared to this one not because of the racing scenes, but because that film actually has a soul, and I cared about the characters. In this movie, everything feels so forced. It’s like a two-hour-long commercial for F1 aimed at newbies. And they say stupid stuff like, “Ferrari and Mercedes are faster on the straights, so we have to beat them in the corners.” It’s just so corny and dumb. It's incredibly bad. 2/10.
