Alonso out of FP3 with a technical issue. No low fuel runs before Quali.

I don’t know what Aston were doing running six sets of tyres scrubbed as Bernie just said. And then Alonso doesn’t even get a chance to do a soft run because they found a problem on the right front.

Isn't that because of the engine problem?

Extremely careless thing to do. If it turns out to be a dumb strategy (which wouldn't surprise me), then they are screwed for Qualifying. They have no bare new soft sets remaining.

They plan on a two-stop race and not using the hard tyre. Tyre degradation seemed poor after 5 laps yesterday on the long-runs. Scrubbing all the tyres does not help the cause, of course.

They typically put 1 lap on the race tires in FP3 to take the shine off. Today though they put 1 lap on 1 Hard, 1 Medium and 1 lap on 3 softs. They did the same in FP1 on 2 sets of softs. The 1 Medium will be for the race. The Hard maybe used for the race. With the heat the hards might not be very effective in Mexico. The time of day start of the Race is 1 HR before the start of Qualifying, It's gonna be significantly hotter. Not sure if the softs are ALL for qualifying or if they one or 2 are for the race.

Plus it's so hot at this time of day, it doesn't tell you much.

They've been scrubbing tires for 2 years. I guarantee it. There has not be ONE race in the last 2 years that they have not scrubbed their tires.

I do not remember ever seeing them scrub their tires for quali though.

Yet again Stroll delivers...

Q3 will be difficult but the track evolution/narrow performance gaps between teams means this will be close.
