Its a grey area whether its outright corruption or not. F1 has and will always favor big brand names because thats what gives it credibility as the premium racing series. If Ferrari and Mercedes decided to race in another serries and leave F1, nobody would think its the premier series. This is why Ferrari has a special revenue deal and why it used to be a joke that FIA stood for Ferrari International assistance. Now, Mercedes is the branding behemoth which gets coveted by them. Mercedes was coming in at the back of the financial crisis and many brands like Honda were struggling to stay in F1.

FIA may not have know the extent to which Mercedes had advantage when they formulated the rules. And ultimately other teams agreed. Paddy Lowe even claimed they hid true performance from everyone to prevent rule changes to close the gap.

I dont think it'll be as bad as 2014, but a mini version of 2-4 years seems very possible.

All the teams were involved, this time, to draw up the plans. So it is better. It kind of mind boggling how long it's taken F1 to get out of the dark ages.

One thing I'm really looking forward to is pre-season testing and the car reveals. In previous years following Alonso I always got the sinking feeling soon after the cars were launched that Alonso was in another dud while looking over at the competition (especially at whatever Newey was cooking). Next year it will be nice to hopefully be on the other side of that and Alonso can finally be in one of the performant cars.

yeah true. they are also driving a chassis thats 2 years old at this point. and they never got it to work in its first iteration to begin with haha.

I think they have actually figured out the floor but still have suspension and plank configuration limitations in the current design that is holding them back.

Agreed. I don't think it will be a performance hindrance but it will have an impact on reliability.
I wonder how many upgrades per year they're allowed? When I think about it, even when they limited upgrades to one a year after the initial release...they still allowed reliability upgrades.

huh? i doubt if he has anything to do with it unless hes an alonso fan too haha. seems like common sense to me though. in one hand, you have a team struggling to make a point on most weekend, and in the other, you have the most successful car designer in the history of the sport, with the best facilities on the grid. if you still have no hope for them to improve just a little bit, idk what to tell you

yeah well just have to wait and see i guess. mercedes engines are probably going to be good. they arent necesarily the same team as they were in 2014. budget caps seem like its hurt them most. i dont think thatll affect them so much in the engine department, but well have to see about the chassis. hopefully the new regs arent so engine biased that anyone with the best engine can beat any other team regardless of how good their aero is like in the past. cowell has been stating that they prefer to be the only team, but i doubt if hes being 100% honest.
