Track position was probably more to blame. Had a lot of traffic to go through on his last lap. Badly managed by McLaren, but anyway, Oscar been really fast around here so far so he deserves it. Hopefully he can carry this pace on for the main race too.

Team stream says:

Albon sneaked by Lando coming at the end of the warm-up lap. That compromised his final attempt. Very busy on track at the end of the session there."

Also my opinion. Could have been front row lock up if not Alex in the mix.
Anyway, if I have to choose albetween a P1-P2 and Max in P3 and actual order is better P1 and P3 with Max P6. Althoug I do not expect to have problems at the start with yuki.

Norris made it over the line with one or two seconds on the clock, so yeah, just out there a bit too late.

He opened the door for Albon, and of course he went through. There was no way for him to make it on time behind Norris

Lando was too close to Albon on his final push lap could see it clear as day on the live driver tracker.

For me it's very simple, Lando has to be ahead of Max to secure the McLaren WDC this week. I want the craziest race possible next Sunday, I don't care who wins.

For me priority is to kick VER out of competition this race, Lando just needs to beat him by 2 points this weekend, and then let NOR and PIA race in Abu Dabi for the title.

Yeah, that's what I meant to say. Max out and then a crazy fight for the WDC.

He was very fast here even as a rookie in 2023. I remember one of the guys from McLaren (not sure who) said that Oscar Piastri is a menace in fast corners. This track is pretty much just fast corners. To get Sprint Pole with that huge moment in T4 is very impressive. He locked in for that last lap and delievered.

Looking back at the video footage of the race, I don't buy the "porpoising" reasoning. There is no porpoising, just dragging the floor on the ground in a controlled and non-oscillating manner. It looks like a grand slam infringement of running the car too low in attempt to gain an advantage. The verdict is absolutely fair and sound. No rule change needed. Nothing to do with power units being swapped and pitlane starts.
I don't really want to get into the PU talks because that's a separate debate that's being milked for no reason IMO, but McLaren definitely had abnormal bouncing in the race. Might have seemed stable from T-Cam, but on the visor cam it was just horrible. Even Ferrari in 2022 wasn't as bad :

I don't think it will enough to stop Norris in Qatar. Looking at the data despite fp1 being weird, Norris has pace in the mediums. Think he might be hard to stop in the race. Would not be surprised if he ends up winning both. Or the race with a podium in the sprint.
Halo not as bad as we thought

Very hard to pass here though. He will probably end up P3 in the sprint unless something spicy happens in turn 1.

He needs to put it on pole tomorrow though. Good thing he got the potential impeding and traffic issues out of the way
