Sharing data and even telemetry related to car performance with other teams is clearly against the regulations. Per FIA

Simplistic analysis but interesting to see that the difference is not that big.

But ignores that Norris made mistakes because of pressure he felt from Piastri. Trying to beat him forced him to push harder in qualifying (and races). It also counts the "crash" in Canada as still happening, even if "Piastrinoda" would move over in that situation. Sprint crash in Austin is also counted, even though in that case Piastrinoda would not attempt a switchback if he was not allowed to overtake Norris. That's 15-20 points.

However, as Norris so refreshingly said immediately after Abu Dhabi where he poured so much praise on Oscar and Verstappen, stating that Oscar made him dig deeper than ever before to find performance, it isn’t a long stretch of the imagination to think that with out Oscar Verstappen probably wins his 5th title.

Yes very simplistic, also McLaren typically based their strategy on trying to keep the drivers equal & not what is the best strategy for one driver, or if they previously started on the dirty side of the grid & now they start on the clean, or changing position & they may have avoided an accident (or put them into an accident).

I’m not talking about the points they took off each other (confusing because the article posted prior to me is talking about points, so sorry about that)

I mean, Piastri pushed Lando into being a better driver. Incidentally, after I posted my post, I read this on Autosport which explains it well:

It's interesting but probably doesn't work precisely as written. If you take Piastri out of the picture, the racing changes considerably. Verstappen, Russell and other drivers would have started alongside Norris more often (no Papaya rules to follow). This would have made life much more difficult for Norris. Possible race ending collisions. Also, with a much weaker 2nd driver, Mclaren would have needed more upgrades to secure the WCC. There's probably an enormous butterfly effect.

Though if we limit the complexities, then Lando doesn't win with multiple rounds to spare (maybe 2-3, but not 5-6). It would still take a bit of work.

One thing that is not up for debate: McLaren have the strongest driver pairing.

This is great in many ways, but it is also a kind of 'achiles heel', with them being so close in performance.

I would guess Alpine is the primary choice here, because it literally makes no sense why they're even using Mercedes engines to begin with. But who knows, if McLaren continues to be very successful going into the new regulation cycle, Mercedes maybe decides they "have had enough" in 2030 and stop the cooperation.

But who knows, if McLaren continues to be very successful going into the new regulation cycle, Mercedes maybe decides they "have had enough" in 2030 and stop the cooperation.

Toto was asked if Mercedes takes any joy out of the success of MCL and the answer was a pretty clear no; Toto went on to say that HPP only exists for one reason and that is to make Mercedes champions. Also, they might even drop 2 teams if they feel that's what gives them the best balance of feedback and reduced timelines for decision making.

So, if MCL continue to perform better than Mercedes even if they don't win the championship, it could definitely force Toto's hands, but I don't think it would be a big problem for MCL if it were to happen, I think Honda or someone else would do a good enough job replacing Merc.
