Audi R26

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

They will probably be one of the primary areas for development, but they won't ever get to 2021 levels. They will definitely get more complex as the seasons pass, and teams will probably find ever more loopholes to increase the complexity. But ultimately there is only so much you can do to with them due to the strict legality boxes and section rules that apply to them.

The bargeboard area was functionally fully unrestricted in 2021. They could do pretty much anything they wanted to in that huge legality box and could add as many elements as they needed to do it. They were so absurdly complex that no aero element in F1 will probably ever come close.

The only way it ever will come close is if dirty air stops being a major hinderance to racing and the teams decide that the cars are too slow and need more downforce. In that case I could see them opening up the bargeboard area for development, as you can get probably a second or two out of more complex bargeboards without really requiring a large rework of the regulations regarding the rest of the car.

Realistically though, if they decide the cars are too slow, they will probably just increase energy flow and/or tweak floor and diffuser regulations.

How are these slots in the t-tray legal? Or could this simply be a not fully assembled car

Probably same as the "inwashing" barge boards with slots, they aren't visible from above or below if the slots are vertical

These T-tray slots were seen in previous regulations (back till 2009? Or 2010?) but not with the whole serration vibe. Looks very interesting.

Seems like a simple thing to replicate for other teams.

Audi is mounting the upper rear control arm to the rear wing pillar. The lower control arms also make a 2 element beam wing. This car is very interesting.

A curious device! Presumably aero sectioned so creating local load on the T-tray leading edge itself, but also venting from under the T-tray to a zone that later feeds the underfloor.
Presumably becomes more powerful at lower ride heights?

In the 17 to 21 regulations, the floor was supposed to be flat with a step, but we know it wasn't.

Is that floor inlet possibly taking advantage of another loophole or free area alongside the plank to create a small venturi tunnel?

Will we see floor edge wings next?

This Audi is definitely so much more developed than expected.

Sauber finished 9th in the championship last year. So this car had a significant amount of exploration with the windtunnel and CFD allocation. They have so much detail in every area.

It reminds me of the Toyota GR010 wheel rim. I call them flower petals.

Audi seems to get a lot of stone chips (or f1 equivalent) in this area of their sidepod, so they started using a protection film over this area (outline indicated by the yellow arrows). It's an unusual problem to have and I haven't seen it on other cars. The film would be there to avoid excessive replacement of the bodywork. My impression is that this debris comes from the front tire throwing up any debris on the track surface. It suggests that the front tire wake is impacting this area of the sidepod quite aggressively.
