Over 150 laps on the first day of testing of new car and PU regs is crazy. Very impressed; I wonder if they are going to commit to the long run-only approach for the third year in a row.

In general they have been solid. It's still too early to tell where everyone's pace is but they don't seem to be cut adrift like Cadillac or even Aston right now, and have been more reliable than Alpine and Audi. Pretty impressive considering they were bringing updates in the final 6 races of '25.

They could still easily be P8 or P9 depending on what Williams or Racing Bulls have up their sleeves but they seem to have most things under control right now, which has not always been the case. They will be one of the biggest beneficiaries if the Merc engine gets whacked, though. Could see them as high as P5 in that case but I don't think any action will (or should) be taken against the Mercedes engine this year.

Taken from the McLaren thread

If this is accurate and Bearman's time was done on 11-lap old rubber that's fairly impressive considering many of the slow corners show Bearman as faster. Obviously the telemetry is a bit wonky after S1, so maybe the "track dominance" graphic is BS. But considering how much faster LEC was on the straights (especially at the start of the lap) than Bearman, Haas didn't seem to be pushing the engine as hard as Ferrari on the best lap at least.

I'm sure they're still well behind the top four teams at a minimum, and probably a few others like alpine and/or Williams but that's still pretty encouraging when I thought they could easily have been almost last.

Apparently Komatsu has stated they will have their race 1 updates on the car for the final week of testing; interested to see if they remain an outlier in terms of sidepod design and also if they remain different from Ferrari, given their close association in the past.

True, absolutely true. Hass is one the best cars in the midpack this season, in great part I would think is the Ferrari heritage, but they have done a great work; probably they are working on an FMT wing too, it’s a low hanging fruit.

I’m still surprised that they are at the front of the midfield considering they do not have the best engine and also developed the 2025 car so late. Just like how McLaren proved you can make up significant ground over a reg cycle, Haas has shown you don’t need to abandon the last year of a reg cycle to maintain or even improve competitiveness at the start of the next one.

Haas better hope Hamilton postpones retirement as long as possible so they can keep Bearman. Once again class of the midfield despite a terrible lap 1. Ocon again lost the coin flip on strategy with the SC but more than anything, compared to Bearman at least, he does not seem to be able to craft an overtake that sticks. Couldn’t pass Gasly in Melbourne. Couldn’t pass Colapinto in China.

Bearman, meanwhile was able to pass Gasly on the same strategy no problem at the SC restart.

Have Haas used their filming day allowance yet?

Haas did their filming day (200km) at Fiorano on 24th January with Bearman and Ocon sharing the load...
