My theory is that Aston Martin is maneuvering to have the option to be disqualified, to avoid either a non-partipicitation fee, or the humiliation of qualifying outside of the 107%.
If they come to P3 and it's looking grim, I am sure that Alonso is fully able to display signs of such serious, but non-permanent, nerve damage that the stewards will be happy to invoke a DQ on the grounds of section 1.4. of the technical regulations.
The stewards may prohibit the participation of a vehicle whose construction is deemed to be
dangerous. Should the relevant information become apparent during a session, such a
decision may apply with immediate effect.
I believe this clause is there to prevent someone from finding a loophole that enables them to strap a Saturn 5 rocket on top of the car, but I do think it's applicable to a car that is causing nerve damage.
