Red Bull Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

This looks nothing like the pictures and renderings that were circulated when Red Bull was promoting and launching the project. The shaft that is sticking out of the front confuses me.

The lower picture is a stripped down version showing just the block. You can see the crankshaft coming out in the middle of the V. On the assembled engine the power is transferred through some kind of gearbox attached to the crankshaft that then leads to the shaft with the red tip, this then attaches to the K.

You can see on the block the flat triangular attachment point for this gear mechanism.

Yes that makes sense. I have a theory that the MGU-K is oil cooled.

What's being shown there, in respect of that MGU-K shaft with red cap on it ?

Is that showing shaft as extended forward (in chassis) FROM installation of MGU-K that's located alongside left hand side of motor in chassis orientation ?

OR .... is that an input shaft FROM gear set and going toward a MGU-K that would be positioned forward of the ICE and alongside the battery location in chassis a la Honda orientation.

If it's a shaft, that's a pretty big item under that red cap.

It's confusing, certainly.

1) Hollow input shaft to the MGU-K gearbox (MGU-K is in front alongside battery)?
2) Hollow input shaft, and MGU-K also has a hollow input shaft?
3) There could be a cooling channel inside the shaft of the MGU-K (mgu-k gearbox oil also used to cool the MGU-K shaft)

On the subject of MGU-K shaft cooling, it would be possible, perhaps even necessary with the higher power output in order to maintain a small form factor electric motor:
