I am not sure about if they are allowed to make a new engine every year, or is Mercedes stuck with their current engine for the following years if it is the best or equal?

I strongly suspect that everyone will have to change their PU for next season anyway. No way the current PU spec continues unchanged.

"If you look up the FIA technical regs on the FIA website, the is a table (in the appendix section, I believe) with ticks for "normal", allowed homologated changes year-by-year, and ADUO changes. Essentially from 2027 onwards, teams are allowed to homologate most ICE-related new components in odd years (2027 and 2029) and electric components in even years (2028 and 2030). So Merc can still homologate a new ICE in 2027."

I have not looked it up personally yet.

I have spent some time trying to confirm this, it seems the homologated engine carries over to 2027. ADUO is your only path to hardware based performance upgrades.

Do back to the original question. If the regulations don't change in a way that requires architecture or pu changes at a hardware layer, then Mercedes will remain with the same power unit until such time the qualify for ADUO.

Not sure how you came to the conclusion, to me it seems to be exactly as the answer you cited claims:

Appendix C5, 3.3: For the years 2027, 2028, 2029 and 2030, upgrades to the components marked with a checkmark in the table of Appendix C4, in the relevant column for each year, may be carried out. Irrespective of
changes permitted under ADUO according to Article 3.3 of this Appendix, such upgrades must be
introduced for the first Competition of the year when they are allowed and used for the whole
Championship season.

According to Appendix C4, it's mostly ICE-related components in odd years and electric components in even years.

I feel like I came across this bit of news a while back but I dont remember when/where.

This long break has put me in an F1 limbo. Won't even seem like the same season when we resume in Miami.
