In Japan, Lewis was just .15 behind Leclerc. And was doing well enough in the race as well.
Just .15s ? He was slower despite Leclerc almost spinning the car exiting Spoon. If your team mate makes such a big mistake and still beats you by 1 and a half tenth, that´s some serious beating.

Ferrari would be doing much better of with Sainz, Bearman or some other. That´s clear

I think Ferrari has bigger issues than one driver being slightly slower than the other. It's not like there weren't plenty of weekends where Sainz was a few positions behind Leclerc or less commonly vice versa. The fact their car is deficient feels more relevant to their current standings..

Solid upgrade.

McLaren simply have the best people at the moment and there isn’t anything anyone can do about that at the moment.

Really curious to see how things stand after Mercedes bring their big upgrade in Canada.

McLaren improved a lot because they are also starting to understand how to use the engine properly. They had huge potential improvement coming from the engine as well.

I’m not surprised.

This is honestly not bad, it’s only a disappointment because we were so strong up until the moment that mattered. But to be this close (ahead of one mercedes and fastest in the mediums) is very encouraging while having an engine deficit. The tyre and engine deficits will be either removed or lessened in the race (I doubt they’ll be much running in the soft) so there’s lots to be hopeful about. It’s a good upgrade, just a shame sq3 was, as always seemingly, the worst bit!

It'll be great to see the telemetry, but till then I suspect they were a lot faster than what they achieved eventually.
My first guess was the soft tyre, overheating in q3, and Charles kinda confirmed this.
I do not believe other teams were sandbagging till q3, rather the softs were not used before.
This is kinda okay after a huge upgrade, some will find the sweet spot some miss it at first, with the temps.
