Mercedes: Double Upgrade Package for the W17 in Canada

The new parts expected to appear on the W17 in the coming hours will affect several areas of the car: the front wing, brake ducts, floor, and sections of the bodywork (particularly the pontoons). This upgrade is significant not so much for the number of components, but for its technical importance in the further development of the W17.

In addition, Mercedes will introduce another particularly important update in Canada — this time invisible from the outside. New launch control software will debut on the W17, addressing what has been a clear weakness for the German team at the start of the season.

Both Antonelli and Russell have consistently lost positions right after the lights went out in the opening races of the year. Mercedes spent considerable time analysing the problem without identifying any major hardware issues. The Brackley team does not believe the difficulties are significantly related to the gearbox, clutch, turbo, or gear ratios compared to McLaren.

The focus has shifted entirely to the software, particularly the predictive traction control phase. The new system, which was already tested during a filming day at Silverstone before the Miami Grand Prix, is primarily intended to improve the software’s ability to accurately “read” the real asphalt grip levels before the race, using data gathered from previous sessions. In the first four races of the season, the system’s predictions rarely matched actual track conditions, which hindered proper torque delivery and traction.

Mercedes hopes that this double upgrade package (aerodynamic + software) will become their first serious counterattack against McLaren. Montreal will tell us a lot — not only about the current competitiveness of the W17, but also about the car’s development potential. With Antonelli leading the championship, the W17 remains the main title contender… provided these updates deliver as expected.

Antonelli: "It's a fairly big package – confirmed Kimi – obviously the numbers tell us that we should go faster, but until we are on track it is always better to be cautious. The balance of the car will change a bit and I have great confidence, because the team is working really well. There is a beautiful atmosphere, a great dynamic, so I am sure we are moving in the right direction. I tried the package in the simulator and it seems to work well, but let's wait for tomorrow."

Well, I think the upgrades are working! Very positive FP1... Kimi just that little bit ahead of George. Gonna be real interesting weekend!

Also, the practice start from Kimi looked good! Here's hoping whatever software tweaks they've introduced will do the job. In saying that, I think any possible damage from a slow start is kind of mitigated by the short run to turn 1

Lord was interviewed by German Sky towards the end of the session and said that the updates had been no talking point at all, which always would be a good sign for them to be working as intended. Both drivers used the same parts and a very similar setup, just slightly different settings at the front wing.

George was getting a lot of wheelspin out of the hairpin. Antonelli otherwise seemed to have good traction.

George is faster everywhere except the straight out of T10 and the T1-2 complex.

If Russell can sort his setup out, I would peg him as the favourite otherwise.

Are you looking at the colors backwards? Antonelli was faster in every single corner bar one. Additionally, Antonelli did his best lap with more fuel than Russell.

Just going by what F1TV themselves said at the time.

I know you're a generational Russell hater but you don't need to attack any remotely positive post.

As I said. If George can get it together, then he'll be fine.

Kimi got close thanks to a mistake by George on his last lap, but worked out for him in the end.

Each driver pairing within a tenth of each other is really emblematic of this current regulation set not really letting drivers flex their driving skills.

Merc stretching the gap to McLaren to a bit over 3 tenths at one of the shortest laps on the calendar bodes well for the team.
