The difference between the team and Honda is that Honda disbanded the F1 department by moving the engineers to different areas and left them their.

Then rebuilt the department with new, inexperienced engineers. The same mistake as 10 years ago.

It also seems like those engineers didn't get the design notes on the previous V6 either, having made the same mistakes.

You can't make this up.

Aston Martin and Red Bull are suffering a leadership vacuum, in that too many changes at the top have brought confusion to work processes.

Can't make this sh*t up:

Should only believe what Asaki-san says, not what haters rant about. The finger pointers are the most toxic.
https://sportiva.shueisha.co.jp/clm/mot ... 30/f1pu_2/
In March 2024, I published my first book, "The Power to Overcome Crises," in which I wrote the following

With the new regulations starting in 2026, electric power will be expanded and motors will become more important, but I think the key to motors will be how they are mounted rather than their performance. Under the new regulations, motors will be mounted to the chassis rather than to the engine."

This causes the car body to experience the motor's driving reaction force, resulting in distortion. This leads to twisting and resonance in the car body, making it technically challenging to ensure durability. Engine manufacturers and car body manufacturers must work together to solve this problem.

It's not just that one issue; I think there will be many challenges that the engine and chassis engineers will have to solve together. That's why, before I retired, I kept telling my juniors to quickly form a team with Aston Martin and Honda and get involved in discussions about how to solve those problems..."

The key to this season's regulations is how to mount the power unit, including the MGU-K (kinetic energy recovery system), into the car body and how to withstand vibrations and driving forces. Mercedes and Ferrari, the works teams, have a good understanding of this and have taken appropriate measures.

However, Aston Martin Honda ultimately failed to succeed. But in my opinion, the people at Honda were aware of the problem beforehand. I repeatedly told my juniors about it before I retired, and it was obvious to see that there was vibration strong enough to damage the battery.

Many of Honda's staff have experience with mass-produced vehicles, so they should know what causes vibrations and what actions are dangerous.

However, I can only think of two possibilities: either Aston Martin didn't listen to the Honda development team's opinion that "things can't continue like this," or the development team's opinions weren't properly communicated to the leaders within Honda.

Confirms my original assessment that the vibrations were coming from the electric motor.

Good that Honda decided to take an whole entire chassis to Japan to try the solutions on it. It's really the best way to do things, having the full work peice on your work bench to test and tweak at your own pace.

And perhaps more importantly, the source of the vibration and how to prevent it has been identified. Now, whether it has dropped to a normal level or a reasonable level, everyone knows what needs to be done. No one will blame anyone else (if such a thing ever happened). If the problem was the electric motor and its components, and it has been resolved, then a more reasonable electrical recovery can now be expected.

Yes it was observed to be gone by viewers and confirmed eliminated by Alonso and Mike Krack. Honda's fix worked.

The next critical issue is now the Aston Martin gearbox.

Yasuaki Asaki interviewed by Tsuyoshi Kawarada

An excerpt from the interview with Asaki on raising the next generation Honda F1 engineers.
[Leaders Who Break Through the Limitation Theory]
However, looking at the fifth term, which started with Aston Martin, the know-how and technical accumulation from the Red Bull and Honda era have been inherited, and it doesn't seem like continuous development has been possible.

It's only natural that some people say, 'Maybe it's the limit for Japanese salaried workers to continue their F1 activities far from Europe......' Such challenges are being faced by HRC, Honda R&D Institute, and Honda headquarters.

But I hope leaders emerge who can break through that limitation theory. I believe the significance of Honda's entry into F1 lies in nurturing and discovering talent to overcome the company's crisis.

At HRC Sakura (Sakura City, Tochigi Prefecture), where research and development related to Honda's motorsports activities is conducted, hundreds of employees are involved in the development of F1 PUs. My hypothesis is that from those who have gained confidence in becoming the world's best in F1, where automakers worldwide compete in the ultimate development race, talented and talented individuals will emerge and save the day.

I hope that even just one such person from HRC Sakura will come forward.

When a company faces a crisis and falls apart, you have no choice but to rely on people who have sharp sense and skills but are treated as "eccentrics" with one or two quirks. By entrusting work to such eccentric individuals, they develop groundbreaking products that change the world and achieve remarkable feat such as becoming number one in Japan or the world. That's how Honda has grown.
...
[The Significance of Honda's Entry into F1]
Even now, within Honda, there must be people with strong preferences who are difficult to handle but highly capable but are buried. I believe that now, in this critical situation, is the time to bring such talent to the forefront.

I believe that when such people suddenly emerge, become leaders, and deliver results, Honda will have the meaning of entering F1 for the first time. Even if such people do not emerge, the current leaders may be able to rebuild their difficult situation on their own. It is worth it in itself.

If we can't win like this, I don't know why we're even competing in F1. This season's F1 has clearly proven that Honda's PU is no good. But if we analyze the reasons ourselves, rebuild ourselves, and win again, we can grow significantly as engineers.

In the second half of the season, I want to see my juniors fighting with confidence. I'm sure they'll do it.

Honda quitting the prologue. Doesnt auger well for EV space. They hace actually sent letters to Honda EV owners to get hybrid vehicles.

Thanks Ispano for the above

Not sure what you mean by "auger", but it's a bad sign for Honda not the EV space.
But not really relevant to F1, unless Honda gets in a bad enough financial situation again to pull the plug.

Yes its a bad sign. Most companies use F1 for marketing not for making money. Most money will now be made from EVs.

Bad sign that they stopped selling a rebranded GM car rather than shutting down their own EV development?

Off topic but Honda is just delaying the EV roll out. It still plans to move forward when the timing is right. It isn't right now. Honda's ultimate goal has always been hydrogen EV. Battery EVs with lipo were always seen as a stopgap, like the Prologue and ZDX (which i drive). Since then they've developed solid state batteries and other battery chemistries. There is no incentive for Honda to go all out on EVs, and they've instead repurposed their EV development towards data centers. Mean while their hybrid systems are getting more advanced and the next generation system is about to be released. They will do fine with the new hybrids and V6 hybrids meant for Large Suvs and minivans.

"Honda's ultimate goal has always been hydrogen EV." - But can't be now. Hydrogen power failed a while ago.

I don't know how data centers make sense for a car manufacturer.

If anything hybrid drive is a stop gap solution. It's a compromise in complexity, reliability, efficiency and ultimately cost as well.

Hybrid is the worst of both worlds.

The "solid state 1000km battery" BS from Toyota for an example has been talked about for what, 5 or 6 years now?

This whole idea that they're going to join the market at the right time is rubbish. The right time was to have killer products at least 2 years ago.

Just because car go vroom vroom dinosaurs are denying EV works doesn't mean they're correct. Those same people were saying I'll get an EV when they do 500 miles, and now that they do, they have changed it to 1000 miles, despite the fact that they only drive that far over the course of 2 months.

Honda have missed the boat massively by betting on Hydrogen, and so have Toyota, BMW and to an extend Audi.

There's massive problems ahead for Europe and Japan because Korea and China have stolen a massive match on them.
