Vowles need to go, along with the Technical Director Matt Harman, who Vowles hired after being sacked by Alpine for making the worst chassis that was overweight. Alpine played a blinder.
There were murmurs about him being a guy full of hot air, talking a good game but lacking the technical skills. The nerve of the guy to say he didn't car about 2024, 2025. All the eggs in the 2026 basket, judge me in 2026.
Preseason it felt odd hearing the overweight rumours but the PR videos he mentioned the car was good and fighting for points regularly. Now that has shifted to not even making it to Q1 this year and focus on next year.
Agreed. I don't think a guy who specialized in strategy is who Williams need to lead them now. They need a more technical leader similar to Andrea Stella or a Binnotto. James Vowles was also known for his reliance on computers and trying to even things out unnecessarily between drivers to an debilitating effect at times. If he can't turn Williams into regular top 10 fighters by end of year or at least get his team to show a fast 2027 car in simulations, he should be fired.
How can anyone trust their simulations when they missed the first tests, did their virtual testing/simulations, James came as late as february to say that they are not on back foot, definitely not overweight, and going to pursue ahead from P5.

You have to ask what this team was doing in 2025? All their focus was supposed to be on this year, but now apparently the car coming to Baku is supposed to be the car they were going to start the year with?

What?

Did they also work for a year on these regulations and then start over again in April?

I really don't understand what's going on with this team! Over the last few years they have reached the Cost Cap limit, invested huge amounts of money in factory equipment and infrastructure, and doubled the size of their workforce. Yet the current car has effectively been in development since early 2025 (or arguably since James Vowles arrived at the team) and even at its launch it looked rather basic and underdeveloped.

Meanwhile teams all across the paddock continue to bring small upgrades from race to race, Williams has gone half a season without introducing even minor visible updates to the car. And now they are already saying that the "B-spec" package planned for Baku will not be particularly revolutionary either...WTF?

At this point, I genuinely struggle to understand where all the time, money and resources have gone. The lack of visible progress simply doesn't match the level of investment made in recent years. :wtf:

2025: we can't develop this year's car because next year is our year

Ha. He is very good at finding excuses. The new on is that the infracture needs are sucking money away from car development. Where was this excuse two years ago?

I really thought Vowles would have brought a Mercedes winning mentality to Williams. Guess not. And to think of it some more, I rate Paddy Lowe way higher than Vowles and not even he could do it.

Doesn’t F1 have a separate CapEx limit outside the cost cap? Is James just waffling to try and muddy the waters? Buying time?

Not sure how anyone could rival the disappointment that was Aston Martin Honda this year, but somehow Williams is close. With that engine and investment from last year they should easily be fighting with Alpine and VCARB for 5th spot. Yet they could soon find themselves 10th fastest.

Williams even has / had been granted a bigger CapEx than the other teams

As I understand it, Williams was that far behind in terms in factory infrastructure, that even spending up to the CapEx limit, they're still not able to bring it up to standard quickly enough.

I can't remember which podcast it was, but one of them recently mentioned as well that Williams was still having to outsource some parts that other teams are able to manufacture inhouse.

James had admitted that he tried to push the team to places they simply don't have the infrastructure for.

My hope is that the old addage that "you learn more from failure than success" holds true and that this year is the kick in the proverbial that the team needs.

Cadillac makes abrupt F1 team principal change
Yet James Vowles holds on...........

The 11th placed team is not happy with its year one performance, yet Williams is satisfied with what James has brought for this season.

What is it about the infrastructure that needs upgrading? Better and more engineering tools? More floor space?

Everything. Facilities, manufacturing, engineering tools, wind tunnel upgrades, etc.

I thought Vowles had things covered, but the results of decades of underinvestment are clearly higher than he estimated. Really a wonder Williams has gotten this far.

Poor Sainz. Vowles lured him with fake promises and is now stuck at Williams. He should have listened to his father.

Makes me think they simply hit the lottery in 2025 which raised expectations for 2026. I wonder if they understand why their base chassis is not making perfect consistent contact with the track with all four wheels and if their tools can help them discover the reason why.
