has anybody noticed that as soon as alonso goes to any team the page numbers for that team in here go up and up? even when aston were doing awful for 3 years straight theres a certain contingancy that are going to follow. there was a boost when honda joined too, and newey of course. what im trying to say is tsunoda, drugovich or crawford aint alonso. not on the track, nor in the sponsors eyes. if you think that aston arent worried of losing alonso, because they can easily scoop up crawford or tsunoda even, youre out of touch. alonso, leclerc, max and hamilton are A tier and tsunoda, albon are B tier.. jak crawford is C tier in the ratings. aston and all their sponsors want to have an A tier driver. especially until they can get this project up and moving.

some things that can tell you when a driver isnt A-tier are: 1 you are thoroughly dominated by any teammate. 2 you have been subsequently "let go" by the team afterwords. 3 the general fact that people find it unlikely that youll ever win a championship, whether its because you wont get into a top team, or because of the high likelyhood that your teammate will beat you if you do.
Alonso was nothing special against Ocon .being paired against an unmotivated Stroll is faltering him ,he was making notable mistakes last year. He is still good but not 2012 good ,if he was in the best car and fighting against the like of Max and Charles i think he will have a tough time especially over one lap. Aston are in the rebuilding process they can afford not to have a top driver
50% the car was brake down under Alonso ,or something technical issues.
People who say Alonso was nothing special against Ocon did not watch the season or are being disingenuous. Alonso's race pace was better or a lot better than Ocon's for most of the season in 2022. Equivalent levels of reliability means Alonso finishes with 60 or 70 more points than Ocon. That is not factoring that Alonso had to overextend the remaining engines he had left throughout the season after losing two in Saudi Arabia and Australia.

Renault's engines were notorious for losing power after having 2K kilometers or more on them, and Alonso spent more time racing exhausted engines than Ocon did.

I think your point would be made clearer if you said that Alonso car was retired 6 times that year vs 2 times for Ocon. That doesn't include the number of time Alonso was DNF'd in Qualifing.

That being said Ocon was closer to Alonso than Stroll is. The biggest problem with Ocon has always been his attitude. As he gets older, and the edge comes off him, he might become a valuable #2 driver. He has to be told he is a #2 driver and he has to behave like one. Naturally the team needs to want to have a number 1 and a number 2. I remember several times in 2022 that Ocon would block Alonso, who was on fresher tires, and in the struggle with Alonso allow other cars pass both him and Alonso. Nonsense, Just let him pass, then later he'll let you pass if you're on fresher tires.

2021 Alonso fractured his jaw before the season and had metal plates during a part of the season. Also didn’t get the power steering he requested until France which was round 9 iirc.

2022 he was way way quicker in race trim. He’s had consistent wrist issues since that Australia crash when he lost the hydraulics. Then alpine wouldn’t give him fresh engine components or updates when he announced the Aston Martin move.

It was in Qatar last year when he put the car
In p4 in sprint qualy and put the car on p1 in sq2 in Brazil. Only driver to stop Norris from topping every session iirc.

Give him a quick car he would get the max out of it. In qualy trim its debatable. But absolutely not in race trim. He would compete with all the perceived top drivers. Just look at the line he took against albon. No other driver was taking those lines. His race craft and tyre management is top 2 minimum.

Anyways let’s hope Honda has improved the handling a bit more for Monza

I think Aston wants a marketable person in the seat, even a slightly slower and older Alonso is far more marketable than Ocon. Ocon seems to cause more trouble than he's worth.

From Ocon's history he is too much trouble but people change. Maybe being let go at Alpine changed him.

Not expecting a whole lot this weekend. I expect a fight at the back with Cadillac. Perhaps Williams will be much further up the grid since they love this track. Honda drivability will still be in R&D mode. Hopefully in Madrid it will be better

Maybe they will put on some low drag aero (upside down rear wing?) or maybe they won't bother, since the PU will be holding them back at this track anyway? We'll see.

Except that race and qualification trim are the same as no setup changes except wing angle are allowed after the start of qualification. Of course during qualification they run minimum fuel load.
