There were rumors that Alonso would renew in Madrid, but he has just confirmed to the press that it won't happen next week. I think he waits to see if both sides of the car are on the right direction, Hungary & Zandvoort was a check but he still needs guarantees from the PU side that it won't be as bad next year. Or a plan B in case that happens...

The rarest resource in this F1 under these set of rules is electrical. It the only resource that varies from corner to corner. To make the most of that energy from a non PU perspective you need to make the most downforce by generating the lease drag and you need to be able to carry the most speed in all types of corners.....
to make the most recovered energy you need less downforce in braking .....
this disproportionately increases the time generating at 350 kW

that's much of the reason for the 2026 '2-state' aero rules

That doesn't make 100% sence to me in that if you don't have enough DF the rear tires lock from lack of DF. I think you need enough DF to atleast recuperate at 350Kw.

If he had those assurances from Sakura, then there is no reason not to sign. The longer this is delayed, the more dire the situation IMO.

at high speed the rear axle grip allows total (friction + generating) rear braking power of over 1000 kW
(because DF is high and also a given braking power requires less tyre grip at high speed than at low speed)

but whenever rear tyre grip allows over 350 kW total braking we are failing to recover energy that has cost us fuel
this is why the max 2026 aero DF has been made less than the 2014-2025 rules gave
When the driver lifts off, the engine cuts power, and the MGU-K switches to capturing kinetic energy from the momentum of the rolling rear wheels.
Because the car is no longer at full throttle, the system unlocks the maximum recovery limit of 350 kW. The MGU-K acts as a powerful electromagnetic generator, dragging on the rear axle and aggressively charging the battery while slowing the car down.

Since the engine is off, the high-downforce aero profile is active, and the MGU-K is pulling 350 kW of resistance, the car experiences strong, natural deceleration (coasting drag).
When the driver finally steps on the brake pedal a few split-seconds later, the Brake-by-Wire (BBW) system simply adds hydraulic disc pressure to the front and rear wheels to finish bringing the car down to cornering speed.

It will always come down to the efficiency of the downforce. If 2 cars have the same drag and car A has double the df, it will not slow down any faster than car B. DF if a force perpendicular to the rear wheels.

That's my understanding anyways.

People can say whatever they want, but for me, Alonso brings tremendous marketing value to Aston Martin. I think he’ll renew, but he’ll set conditions like Honda delivering something competitive by the start of 2027, or else securing another supplier for 2028. If Honda doesn't at least match Audi right from the start of the 2027 season, I doubt they’ll stay for 2028. Alonso has always said that his condition for renewing would be guarantees of progress.

My question is: is Honda capable of delivering an engine for next year that is at least competitive like the Renault engine was with Red Bull? not the best engine, but something with the aston can be able to compete in a decent level.

That's a strong statement... The FIA has been kissing Ferrari's butt for like 40 years.
Ferrari used to be that team. What happened with the start procedure this season was a farce, Ferrari specifically designed their engine for better starts compromising top end performance. And of course, since Mercedes didnt like it, FIA changed it immediately. The fact that they qualified for ADUO is a farce.

I agree with you that keeping Alonso for at least one more year before signing a big name is crucial, as the driver market is tied up at the moment. Piastri, Sainz and Gasly could be options for Aston Martin for 2028, if the team is doing better.

The question about Honda being able to build a competitive engine next year to rival Mercedes is obviously a no at this point, and Honda have said that themselves. I think they might be able to catch Audi by the end of next year, as they didn’t seem to get much from their ADOU package either.

Asked about the expected timeline for reaching the competitive level Honda is targeting, Orihara revealed: "It's difficult to say an exact time scale in Formula 1 because our performance is always relative to another competitor.
"After the summer shutdown, we want to go back to the racing field, and then we are working hard in the factory to bring an even bigger step for 2027, but, again, we should be realistic. "So, I think that at the beginning of 2027, maybe we will not have the best of the power units yet, but we will be closer to the top competitor. And then we keep pushing hard to be top competitor, I hope, in 2027 or 2028."

Hope is not a strategy. Hoping for something does not mean it will happen in 2027 or 2028. The facts are that Honda has the worst PU on the grid, and the spec 2 of the motor with ADOU is still way off the next weakest Audi engine for performance. The issue isn’t just outright engine power, it’s harvesting, deployment, drivability, and reliability. The deadliest thing for a fast car is a turd of an engine that is unreliable, and suffers from unpredictable performance. Ferrari brought 2 ADOU upgrades this season, and added 30hp to its already strong engine. Why isn’t Honda able to do 2 ADOU this season, as its engine is so atrocious?

Now Honda has 5 months to build a new engine / PU system for the revised 2027 regulations. It took them 3 years to have an engine that is around 30hp down to Audi, with miserable deployment and harvesting performance. I think based on the evidence of this Spec 2 motor, by 2028, Honda should have a solid package for the team. I am not expecting anything at all from them next year, except more torture on all of the high speed tracks on the calendar. I do think the chassis will get better, and the car could be in the top 4, with a good chance of points at Monaco, Singapore, and Hungary. But without a competitive PU, this team will be 9th or 10th again in the constructors championship, loosing sponsors and millions of dollars.

If Alonso said he is not signing anything at Madrid, then I also believe that there is something happening back at the team regarding Honda assurances, and almost certainly money. Alonso apparently needs 40 million reasons to stay next year to drive this green bus, and I don’t blame him one bit.

Sh*t weekend but it was more or less expected. Might be better next week but not expecting any points or Q2.

It makes sense for Alonso to wait before renewing his contract, he's holding all the cards right now.

Plus, it puts added pressure on Honda.

Knowing how he usually handles these things, I highly doubt he’ll want to renew for just one year. Most likely, he will push for a two/three year deal with an escape clause that allows him to leave after the first year if the season turns out to be another fiasco.

He doesn't want to develop the project only for another driver to end up fighting for podiums after he had to deal with this whole phase. The chances of that happening next year are extremely low, so I doubt he'll accept a single-year contract. He will either call it quits this year or sign for multiple seasons.

Therefore, it makes perfect sense for him to drag this out within reason to maximize his leverage and put added pressure on Honda and the team.

There are report that Aston Martin want Honda to pay part of Alonso salary and increase contribution to AMR budget.
This may be the reason why the contract is delayed. May guess is that Honda will likely reject this request because Honda itself is under
going tremendous pressure from its EV restructuring. If Honda is paying for driver, they would rather put a Japanese in the team instead,

During yesterday's press release it was mentioned that the drivability had improved, Any thoughts on this.
Also have they been able to use the full 30HP upgrade on the spec 2 or still at 10HP.

I read from one source that the HP gain was only 18-19. No one truly knows what the upgrade was worth.

Drivability did look better at Monza.

what about the battery and recharge issue, Honda seem to be lagging in this area also, if Honda does not fix these things they will be in the same situation with the 2027 engine, spending 3 to 4 races fixing the drivability.

That area is so complicated that it is hard to find sources regarding that. I have no idea where Honda stands with its electrical side.

“Based on our roadmap, we’ll take a big step forward for the first race. It’s hard to say if we’ll be able to make up the entire gap by then, but we’re working towards it.” - Orihara

If they could close more than half the gap by the first race in 2027, that would be a big win in my book.
