Not so sure. It's like saying Cadillac will vastly improve since they're running a Ferrari engine. Just need to drop weight!

Rather than focussing the exhaust flow upon the diffuser and rear wing, within its more restricted space Mercedes have instead created winglet extensions of the rear wing support pillars and used the FTM exhaust to enhance the effect of those winglets.

The dimensional regulations mean that, unlike the FTM flap of the Ferrari with its more rearward differential, the Mercedes upper flap cannot sit this far back in free air. Instead, Mercedes have made it legal by physically connecting it to the wing support pillars. The whole pillars/winglets/flap assembly are defined as one component and in that way comply with the regulations.

However, the device was removed after second practice and the car reverted to the version used at Monza. Mercedes reported that while the downforce increase was measurable, the penalty it imposed on power unit performance was greater than the upside.

Without the extra effective length of the diffuser ramp that the Ferrari layout makes possible, the downforce boost of the FTM alone was evidently not enough on the Mercedes to make the PU power reduction worthwhile.

By blocking part of the exhaust outlet, the back pressure of the exhaust will increase. This is especially the case on a turbocharged engine. The turbo is spun by the pressure differential between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust outlet.

If you increase the back pressure of the outlet by blocking part of it, then there is less pressure differential to spin the turbo. It should still be able to reach its boost targets but will have to spin faster to do so.

There will also be more turbo lag, making the engine less driveable and consistent. The effect is amplified at high altitudes and the Madring is one of the highest altitude circuits on the calendar, roughly equal with the Red Bull Ring, though way lower than Mexico City.

I am pretty sure Ferrari is not that amateurish not to have a precise measurement and calculation if their solution gives them laptime or not.
Perhaps its true that with the different suspension other teams can not make it work, as Ferrari suspected as well.

Any hints on the engine outcome for Leclerc?

Looking at the gaps I would take engine penalties on both cars because they're miles behind Mercedes and come qualifying will likely be behind both McLarens and Red Bulls so that is P7 and P8 for the race, they should be able to get back there even starting from the back because the gaps to the rest is huge. They will likely have better chances on other tracks where they don't want to be taking penalties there. Surely this is a no brainer and yes I know they're probably using the old spec engine in practice, well Lewis at least, Charles may be testing out his Monza engine to make sure its working correctly.

He should definitely take the penalty here.

The car was atrocious today.

Weirdly I thought we looked very strong in FP1 and then suddenly nowhere in FP2. I’m not sure the gaps are representative as presumably the red flag impacted the run plan.

That's a very strange take. It claims that Ferrari, with their extra downforce coming from FTM, has decided to "crank the aero surfaces a bit harder" and because of that the car became "peaky" and needed to be made stiffer.

So surely the problem is not FTM, is the direction they took the aero development? Is he claiming that presence of FTM FORCED Ferrari to make their car "more peaky"? I don't think that's the case.

Some people try really hard to find peoblems with Ferrari's developments, FTM, the Macarena wing and so on. It's interesting to me how since many teams have adopted the larger opening on the rear wing the chatter about how it's actually worse has decreased massively.

so during the almost end of fp3 lewis car changed the barge board.. and without the tow towards the very end i think he was down by 3 to 4 tenths. so tow is really powerfull, i really wish they think about taking penalti for one car like charles and give tow for lewis, might not get pole but might end in p3 at the very least..

I for one approve of Horner joining Ferrari. Maybe they would become a dominant team again.

The engine gap is huge. The more representative gap is the one from Russell to Hamilton because Leclerc is a Baku´s specialist. I don´t see Ferrari catching up even on the future years. Mercedes has a lot of pace up on their sleeves that they are hiding to keep getting ADUO

Leclerc’s lap wasn’t anything special, certainly not one of his Baku specials, it was just good enough, more or less like his whole season I guess, and that’s being generous.

Yeah but despite not doing anything special, his lap was still 0.5s than Hamilton, which has not happened much with the current car, this year. When a driver is a specialist on a given circuit, even a "normal" lap will be very fast. His S3 was yellow, IIRC , and that was really poor because I think they planned for Hamilton to give him a tow but I guess it was too far away
