Extra-long races..

Post

..would you watch them?
I've always wondered why F1 doesn't have a special race, once a season, that's twice as long as other races. I see it as a good thing. They have them in other racing series and they're essentially the flag-bearing races. Like Bathurst 1000, Indy 500 (not sure if that's the longest race in the calendar) or Le Mans 24 hrs.

What is your opinion of a longer F1 race?

Would you watch it?
Do you think the strategy involved in getting to the end would make it more entertaining to watch?
Would it broaden the appeal of F1?
Do you have any suggestions for a track and distance to hold this event?

(nevermind the current time-limit, this is a special case  )

i can't see any f1 driver being fit enough to last up to 4hrs in an f1 car

trouble would be the current regulations mean no filling up, imagen the long wheel base of a one of car for that race! lol

some sort of f1 tanker!

Historically there have been GPs of 400 km instead of the 300 kms we have now. I would appreciate more races, some longer races and a good spread of historical and commercial races with those which are at good venues like Spa and Suzuka. In my view the season should be 10,5 months with three weeks of summer break and more races in winter in the southern hemisphere. South Africa and Mexico (Baja) would be nice.

Oops, forgot Hawai. Definitely a place to go in winter.

You can have them in the same car as it were, an opportunity for extra drivers maybe.
Think Ferrari A and Ferrari B racing. Sure the drivers won't have a perfect car, such is the added level of complexity of running 2 drivers in it. They could stop and re-fill, say, once. Change drivers and tyres say 4 times (These numbers are arbitrary).

The point is, if it could happen (and I believe it can) would you watch. The rules would be bent or exceptions made for this race alone.

I'm not asking about multiple races, sure that'd be good. This idea isn't instead of extra races, it could be as well as.
I'm on about a "flag-ship" race. The race that everyone gets interested in, even those outside of the main following, like Bathurst and Indy.

I think all F1 races should be timed events, some could be 1 1/2 hour, 2 hour,
2 1/2 hour, etc, currently Monza is about 1 hour 20mins, too short for my liking

I would like to have races which are a little bit longer that the current 90 min races. Something around 2h would be fun or ~410km.

I don't think the sport needs longer races, but i'd watch them anyway because it is F1.. i'm a hostage to any changes they bring in.. if the politics are still there, i'll watch the sport.

Imagine the size of the cars with no refueling tho!

..hmm in fact i think i have a photo of the endurace-spec Mercedes MGP W02 right here...

I think one long race might be fun, but not a season of them as the LG survey seemed to be suggesting - I don't have the endurance!!! :)

The big problem I see with this is cost. Effectively, new cars with endurance parts would need to be built as a one off and that doesn't really fit into the new low budget (tee hee) F1.
