Okay here goes:

The year is 1984. It rained so heavily on race day that the drivers complained it would be unsafe to speed through a dry tunnel and then emerge onto a soaking wet track. So the organisers flooded the tunnel(!) using fire hoses. That took them a little too long which delayed the race.

Btw this is the very same race that saw Senna and Bellof storming through the field only to be stopped by a premature checkered flag.

I haven't got a good question at the moment. So I open up the thread to anyone who does...

Ahh.. yes, makes sense.

A shame that Bellof was killed as he was going to be a bloody good driver in the coming years.

Another historic F1 picture riddle about safety.

The picture shows a new kind of service to F1. Please answer the following questions.

Which accident triggered the founding of the service?
Which organization pushed the introduction?
What was the name of the service?
When was it introduced to F1?
Who was the first F1 driver in the general advisory commission of that service.

Which accident triggered the founding of the service?
Jackie Stewart's crash in the BRM P261 just after the Masta Kink in the 1966 Grand Prix de la Belgique on 12 June 1966, the day after his 27th birthday.

Which organization pushed the introduction?
I imagine that the answer you are seeking is the Owen Organisation. It was not, however 'pushed' by that organisation. It was promoted by Louis Stanley, brother-in-law of Sir Alfred Owen, Chairman of The Owen Organisation. Louis Stanley at that time headed up the Owen Racing Organisation, more familiarly known as BRM. It was, in effect, an extra-curricular activity for Big Lou.

What was the name of the service?
The International Grand Prix Medical Service.

When was it introduced to F1?
It was inaugurated at Oulton Park in Cheshire on 16 September 1967 during the International Gold Cup meeting and it was available for use at that race. The Mobile Hospital itself was dedicated by the Bishop of Chester.

Who was the first F1 driver in the general advisory commission of that service?
The correct term in this case is General Advisory Panel but I know what you trying to say. It was Karl Jockum Jonas (Jo) Bonnier.

That is a fine answer, although I thought that the biggest push for the IGPMS came from the GPDA. They insisted upon the service even when organizers had basic facilities.

Sorry to say, that is not correct. It is true that he was the Honorary Secretary of the GPDA at the time but it remains the case that Louis Stanley was the force behind the establishment of the International Grand Prix Medical Service. As an aside, Louis was, with Helen Stewart and Jim Clark, in the old converted Cadillac ambulance that ground its way to the Liège Hospital. Stewart had back, shoulder and hip injuries as well as petrol burns and all this had a very large effect on Stanley.

You can be assured that it was his baby, first and last.

Hmm. Not sure I'm sufficiently creative to do a riddle.

So something less complicated. James Hunt's last Grand Prix was at Monaco in 1979. He was relieved that he'd got away with an F1 career without killing himself.

But a few years later he was offered a very large sum of money, £2.6 million, to return for the 1982 season. He considered the offer seriously but ultimately rejected it.

Who made the offer on behalf of which team?

That would have been Bernie or Max on behave of Bernie I guess. He sold Brabham in 1988.

Between them, matt21 and WhiteBlue answered the question.

matt21 got the first part - Brabham. WhiteBlue provided two optional answers for the second part and one was correct, Ecclestone.

Not sure who gets next go but since Matt21 was first and his contribution was unequivocal, I reckon the baton should pass to him.
