Mercedes GP MGP W01

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Schumacher used the new wing and Rosberg the old wing in qualifying.

Not sure about that.
Pictures from qualifying show Roberg's rear wing with the duct.

Edit: I take that back. Seen another picture which proves otherwise.

It turns out that Rosberg DID run the new wing in qualifying. Schumacher caused the confusion by saying Rosberg had switched, but it was a mistake.

In that video the center of the wing is undistinguishable because it is hidden behind the camera unit. Schumacher later confirmed himself that both cars were on the same spec. He had been mixing up something in his first interviews.

Schumacher said his problems were with low speed corners, he just couldn't exit as fast. He had a similar setup (maybe except the wing?) to Rosberg which is interesting.

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/82987
"Basically it's mostly at the exit of slow corners. I just can't get out of those all weekend long. We're looking at all the data to try to understand that."

Schumacher was 0.7 seconds slower than team-mate Nico Rosberg, who qualified fourth, and admitted that the younger German was simply doing a better job at present.

"The fact is that Nico has been doing a great job all weekend," said Schumacher. "Quite honestly our set-ups are pretty much identical. That's why we're looking at why I'm struggling with what I'm struggling with."

It looks like Rosberg is definitely the real deal. Not only is he Merc's future, it's becoming increasingly clear that Nico's already their clear top dog in the here and now. Sadly, it looks like no f-ducted rear wing, major upgrades or B-spec car for Barcelona can save Schumacher's comeback now.

I'm a Schumacher fan, but whatever changes to the car they make from Barcelona onwards, I hope it won't be to give Schumacher a few tenths yet at the expense of Rosberg's performance and ability to set up the car to his liking.

According to Formula1.com, the Merc uses sensors to control their rear wing. Wouldn't that be a proper active aero system and thhus illegal? If they can use sensors to run the change in the rear wing then presumably McL can also do so?
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

The wording isn't right in IMO.
I think the writer meant they use pressure sensors to tune it.

I cannot see that doing much.

Haug said they would give Schumacher a new chassis for Barcelona. They suspect that something is fishy with the current unit but they cannot investigate while the chassis is on the fly away schedule. So they make a new tub anyway.

Wonder why they didnt make the W01-01 Michaels car this weekend and make Michaels W01-03 what under the old rules, be called the T Car for the weekend???

Sounds like the W01-03 has suffered some delamination or loss of rigidity, posibly in the first corner at Melbourne, as it was good till then.

Tuning with sensors is what they did with the wires on friday. They likely have appertures they can change inside the wing/duct assembly.

Controlling it implies they're deploying control strategies during the race with the help of sensors, which would be llegal.
