As an anti-football Englishman, I hope that England go out in the group stage so that we won't have to put up with endless tripe in the media about bloody football.
And don't start me on the whole "players are heroes" rubbish that gets spouted either. No one running around kicking a ball about for 90 minutes is "heroic" no matter how much you dilute the meaning of the word.
I hate football.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

Seriously though, I'm not the biggest football/soccer fan in the world, but since it's happening right in my back yard it's hard to ignore.. As a local boy I'm obliged to support Bafana, but realistically we can't hope for much more than progressing from the group stages. Beating Denmark in the warm-up game was unexpected though, so maybe they'll surprise me..

F1, Le Mans, World Cup, Tennis and the Download Festival are all brodcast to me. Most by TV, but the Download Festival is broadcast via a internet stream.

That's probably the only reason I only watch free to air stuff, its a self imposed limit to enable me to have a life!
Usually soccer is terribly boring, but I sometimes make an exception for world cups. I don't think the German, English, French, Italian suspects are up to it this time. So Spain or Brazil should probably make it. But there is also the chance of a surprise coming from an underdog team that exceeds their natural level of performance during a tournament. Those are the good games I like to watch.
What is the word on LeMans? Will there be an online offer?

I'm picking a Germany vs Brazil final. (although I secretly hope Spain win it all.)
Germany has the perfect balance of youth and experience. They're a very strong team and used to playing in the cold weather. They don't seem too tired even though some of their stars have played a long season. Their coaching (Lowe) is top class and they will have the upper hand tactically in most matches.
Brazil is very tough on defense. This year's team is not your typical Brazil. Dunga has built on a very strong defensive mentality with pretty OK forwards. (Can you name any of the Brazilian forwards other than Robinho, but that doesn't count because you know him for his sheet character not his work rate on the field.) Brazil might win all games 1-0. They will bully their opponents quite a bit.
Spain is loaded but they will find a way to shoot themselves in the foot again, as will Holland, even though they look good. Argentina has 23 forwards so their games might be 18-14 losses (Yeah I said it). Chile doesn't have the experience. Portugal doesn't have enough personnel. Italy might just not make it out of the easiest group this year, that's how bad they are. And don't get me started on France; Domenech is crap. The English are pretty dangerous but I doubt they're championship material. Cappello can change that though.
So, I hope USA does really well. I'll be cheering for them all the way. It would be fantastic if we go all the up to the semis and I am dreaming of a final appearance.
I would look out for a Hiddink-coached team. Those Aussies did pretty well in 2006 and looked like they were in equal footing with the Italians in that match. With Hiddink, they'll have a counter tactic for each of their opponents.
As for African teams, I don't see them going that far. However, I do think SA will beat Mexico in the opener, 3-2.
I'm really excited about the WC. Unfortunately I'll be at work for most matches so I'll be limited to weekend matches and text commentary during the work days. That actually makes me sad.
Let's just hope that a Cinderella team storms the tournament though. Let's hope my Greeks come out of their shell and give their country something to be happy about for once, kind of like Euro 2004. Those were great days.
Let's also hope for a safe tourney. The fears are warranted but I hope nothing major happens.

Anyone of those 4, Spain look a bit dodgy at the back but then so do Argentina and Brazil. Its those 3 teams attacking prowess which will see them reach later phase of the cup.
Portugal are my "emotional" pick, becuase of my ancestry. But I see them as a solid defensive unit with a very good new young goalie, and two world class central defenders in Carvalho and Alves.
Their Midfield is pretty amazing really with Pepe and Ronaldo of Real Madrid, Nani of united and Simao of atletico and Deco of er, nowheere in particular now. Their holding players are decent in Veloso and Meireles, the only problem is a striker(since Eusebio they struggled to find one).
But they have found a Brazilian striker who has scored 4 in 6 for them so maybe....at 20 to 1 this is a definite bet at least!

Gosh, I didn't realize the US boys are in the tournament! =D> I would not mind if they would do the Cinderella act. They'll probably bring the only decent cheerleader team.
