It was already mentioned before that 2006 faces the celebration of 100 years since first GP and that the winner of first GP in 1906 was Ferenc Szisz driving Renault but did you know that one of the mechanics working on that car in 1906 GP was Emile Rédélé and his son Jean Rédélé is founder of Alpine?

Perhaps this is why Renault have chosen 2006 to present new Alpine.

Wow! you sure are well informed! I did'nt even know that Renault has history in F1 before 1978... (in the "all cars ever" section we can't browse for cars before 1950). Do you have pics?

Great piece of info manchild! I had no idea that Jean Rédélé's father went back that far, I thought he had a Renault Dealership (which makes sense).

Renault have been involved in motorsport since day 1 - it's quite neat that they bookended 100 years with the drivers/manufacturer's championship.....

Jean Rédélé is still seen at Alpine gatherings - at one he single out a car from one of our club members (in amongst pristine restorations) - with a smile patted it and said "bon - beaucoup de guerre". A man who understands his cars were made for competition....

They were not in F1 before but they were in Grand Prix racing racing since the beginning.

Which pics you'd like to see? There was video from first GP here http://marvin.kset.org/~sepa/f1/1906_Fr ... d_Prix.wmv but it is not there anymore. Good thing I saved it and burned on CD  It is 39 mb so I can't send it but perhaps someone else has it on some server?

Another anniversary, 50 years ago - in 1956, Renault "Etoile Filante" broke world speed record reaching 308,9 km/h. It had jet turbine engine "Turbomeca Turmo" developing 1,270bhp at 28,000rpm

Bit more about Alpine... fastest Renault racing car of all times was 1978 Alpine Renault A443 - 380kph!

I found this on the net:

It'fun to see a GP car bringing three replacement tyres for Le Mans! I would like to see this video, even if the quality must be horrible... 1906! It must be a "charlie chaplin" style race. LOL

I understand you can't upload the video, but could you give me the complete file name, 'cause with it I can maybe found the file on the web? In your previous post that have been edited/deleted, you mentioned quality was surprisingly good, with even an on-board camera!!! that arose my wish to see it...

Hehe... yes sorry I started typing and than decided to delete the post (didn't know that anyone managed to see it)

Yes I checked the video and it is 39mb. I don't have space big enough or email that allows that big atatchments. Video is really nice even though it was made before Chaplin's time.

the original file name was 1906_French_Grand_Prix.wmv

This is not a GP car but it is a very first Renault and very first racing Renault too with Louis Renault at the wheel - Voiturette (picture taken in 1899)

Image

ImageImage

Renault Voiturette was built at Billancourt (France) by Louis Renault back in 1898, when he was only a little over 20. He reconstructed the small tricycle of de Dion’s to a 4-wheeled automobile and changed the driving belts and chains making much noise, which were used before, with an innovation - a gearbox, having three forward gears and one backward.

Image
The drive power for the first, direct gear was delivered via an articulated shaft onto the differential gear of the rear axle. Later on this concept was also implemented for constructing other automobiles and basically is still used today almost unchanged.

Image

The first Renault automobile had a 1-cylinder engine with water-cooler, produced by De Dion-Bouton firm; the diameter of its cylinder was 66 millimeters, piston stroke 80 millimeters. Its volume was 273 cubic centimeters. The total power of this engine located in the front part of automobile was 1.3 kilowatt (1.75 horsepower). The Voiturette, having a weight of around 350 kilograms plus two passengers, made up to 32 km/h, consuming 6 liters of petrol per 100 kilometers.

In 1899 it won Paris-Ostende, Paris-Rambouillet and Toulouse-Paris races...

I've got some videos of some of the cars shown above from when Rene Arnoux and Montagny demonstrated them at the Renault World Series last year at Donington. I'll try and host it + post it later.
