After watching Button pass a Toyota exiting the pits, it made me think:
- Can you overtake in the pit lane?
- Where does the pit lane end?
- Why are you allowed to cross the white line entering the pit lane, yet you not exiting?
I have had a look in the 2006 sporting regs, but it is not clearly defined. From memory, Button crossed the inner white line exiting the pits and crossed the line on the track after passing the Toyota.
As for when entering the pits, I remember a few years ago a couple of drivers being penalties for crossing the white line. Yet when entering the pit drivers regularly cross the line, especially at the A1 ring.

1. Yeah, but not by racing. If your crew releases you before the other guy, you go past him. But you can't race with him, primarily because there isn't enough room, it's unsafe and illegal. But its not like one car can go faster than the other car. There is a speed limit and your speed limiter is (hopefully) on.
2. The speed limit area ends right after the semafor, but you're not allowed to just dart out onto the track. You have to stay inside the white line otherwise you'll make Charlie mad and he'll make you do a drive-through penatly.
3. I don't know the exact answer, but I would imagine that it is allowed because you never see the two cars racing each other to the pit stop, so it is not really unsafe. I believe that Schumacher always waits until the very last possible moment to change his direction and steer towards the pits.
In the brief period when Alonso was the man of the moment, the fight between Montoya and Raikkonen switched to the pitlane where the two men left the pits side-by-side. At the exit Kimi had the line.
You have the pit speed limiter set within the pis so whoever leaves the line first at the end takes the lead out of the pits. I think Montoya got fined for that didn't he???

After you pass the horizontal white line leaving the pits it is all good, but you can not go leave the exit ramp (the white line that is vertical) if your car goes over that white line when you leave the pits, you get a drive-thru penalty.
In regards to Fisi, it all started in the Belgium Grand Prix last year, Montoya was pitting and Rakekieon needed to pit, but Montoya was still in the box, so Raikekeon went into the pit lane, he went as slow as possible and held up other cars in the process, when he got to mclarens pit, montoya was leaving the pit box.
After that race, the FIA maded it a rule that you can not slow down the field in the pit lane, so when Fischella went to pit, he was going slow but not too slow, but slower then usual, and the car behind him was Michael Schumachers I bevelieve, Michale weaved left and right making it seem like that Fischella was going slow, the FIA saw it and properly checked his speed and concluded that Fischella was driving to slow in the pit lane.

I think they checked his speed to make sure or the telemetry from Renault or the FIA , it was not all visual, they had to have some evidence there.
