F1 drivers play tennis for charity

Some of the world’s best F1 drivers and Australian tennis legends will team up for a round robin tennis event on centre court at the historic Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club in Melbourne, on March 29.

The charity fundraising event dubbed ‘Pit Stop Tennis Pro-Am”, will feature F1 drivers including Mark Webber and team mates Nico Rosberg and Alex Wurz, current world champion, Fernando Alonso, Nick Heidfeld, Jacques Villeneuve, Giancarlo Fisichella and Christian Klien and Aussie tennis stars, John Fitzgerald, Wally Masur, Jason Stoltenberg and Wayne Arthurs.

After five successful years in Barcelona, the Pit Stop Tennis Pro-Am finally comes to Melbourne and is open to the public for a gold coin donation. All funds raise on the night will go to the Mark Webber Challenge Foundation to be distributed to TLC for Kids and Cancer Plus (Cancer Council Tasmania), the two charities aligned with the 2006 Mark Webber Challenge Foundation.

According to Pit Stop Tennis Pro-Am Tournament Director and Founder, Chris Styring, Victorians are invited to watch some of the worlds fastest racing car drivers team up with some of the biggest names in Australian tennis history to battle it out on court.
“After enjoying great success in Spain we felt the event would provide a great opportunity to generate additional excitement for the Australian Grand Prix and upcoming World Group Quarter-Final Davis Cup Tie between Australia and Belarus,” commented Styring.

Mark Webber, who is defending his tennis title from the 2005 event in Spain, is keen to add another victory to his tally of three out of four wins and is looking forward to the event being held in Melbourne.
“To have the Pit Stop Tennis Pro-Am event in Melbourne, where F1 drivers mix it with Aussie tennis pros on court, is going to be fantastic and fun to watch. It’s always been casual and fun but there’s also an element of serious competition, which can sometimes lead to a few tennis balls and racquets going astray!
“ It’s fantastic we have the support of so many F1 drivers and tennis stars, which will guarantee the spectators a great event and importantly it’s all in aid of needy Australian children who require support, and what a great way to help them out,” said Mark.

With the World Group Quarter-Final Davis Cup tie to take place at Kooyong between April 7 – 9, Australian Davis Cup Captain John Fitzgerald said:
"It's great for tennis to be able to help the Mark Webber Challenge Foundation raise money for two worthwhile charities.
"Kooyong has seen some memorable tennis events over the years and I look forward to seeing if the Grand Prix drivers are as fast on their feet as they are in their cars."

TLC for Kids Chief Executive, Tim Conolan speaking on behalf of both charities, said: “I am delighted that an event of this calibre is being staged to help raise money and awareness of the plights of sick Australian children”.

Thank god Juan Pablo Montoya isn't entering this tournament or he might have another tennis accident :P .

Webber is good in this game :wink: . He already won the tournament 3 times, last year is was held in Spain.

I think it's nice of the F1 drivers to do such a thing for charity!

Well I think it's interesting yes. This is F1 site and this is a part of F1. The drivers are famous and they use that to collect money for charity. I think it's really generous thing to do!

They will probably genuinely enjoy it too. Not only can they combine keeping fit with a bit of healthy competition but it will probably make a nice chance from your average, stiff, corporate bash... and they will be helping charity at the same time. Not to mention an opportunity for the fans to get a few signatures no doubt.

His name wasn't between the people entering the tournament :wink:
Ron Dennis must have said that he can't play tennis ever again for as long as he's in McLaren team :P

Hehe, good one Manchild.

Let's try to come up with F1 drivers, that are participating, and who they could be when they would be tennisplayer:

Mark Webber -> Ivanisevic
Nico Rosberg -> Nadal
Alex Wurz -> Karlovic
Fernando Alonso -> Federer
Nick Heidfeld -> Hewitt
Jacques Villeneuve -> Agassi
Giancarlo Fisichella -> Safin
Chrisian Klein -> Henman

Anyone has better idea's?

Henman never seemed all he was cracked up to be.

JPM took a part in at least one of these tournaments (2004 for sure).
This year however, Ron Dennis really must have a say... :-)

Isn't Marc Webber a cycling man?
Simon: Nils? You can close in now. Nils?
John McClane: [on the guard's phone] Attention! Attention! Nils is dead! I repeat, Nils is dead, ----head. So's his pal, and those four guys from the East German All-Stars, your boys at the bank? They're gonna be a little late.
Simon: [on the phone] John... in the back of the truck you're driving, there's $13 billon dollars worth in gold bullion. I wonder would a deal be out of the question?
John McClane: [on the phone] Yeah, I got a deal for you. Come out from that rock you're hiding under, and I'll drive this truck up your ass.
