Camera's

Post

At every race, I know there is a camera on top of the engine cover, but on the nose, sometimes, there is only one camera (usually on the left or right) and sometimes some cars have both, why is there such a variation of this, shuoldn't it be the same for all teams?
Simon: Nils? You can close in now. Nils?
John McClane: [on the guard's phone] Attention! Attention! Nils is dead! I repeat, Nils is dead, ----head. So's his pal, and those four guys from the East German All-Stars, your boys at the bank? They're gonna be a little late.
Simon: [on the phone] John... in the back of the truck you're driving, there's $13 billon dollars worth in gold bullion. I wonder would a deal be out of the question?
John McClane: [on the phone] Yeah, I got a deal for you. Come out from that rock you're hiding under, and I'll drive this truck up your ass.

i guess it comes down to a commercial decision. more people will want to see a shot of a McLaren, Ferrari, Renault, Honda etc than maybe a Super Aguri and Midland (no offence to their supporters or sponsors)

could those camera's aid in the direction of the air flow? I do not think those camera's on the nose cone produce downforce?

The FIA regulations state
20.1 Presence of cameras and camera housings: All cars must be fitted with either two cameras, two camera housings or one of each at all times throughout the Event.
20.2 Location of camera housings: Camera housings, when used, must be fitted in the same location as cameras. Details concerning the size and weight of all camera housings may be found in the Appendix to these regulations.
20.3 Location and fitting of camera equipment:
20.3.1 All cars must be equipped with six positions in which cameras or camera housings can be fitted. Referring to Drawing 6, all cars must carry a camera or camera housing in position 4, the position of the remaining camera or camera housing will be determined by the FIA after consultation with the relevant Competitor.

There's a little more, but basically they have to carry a camera above the roll hoop/air intake, and then the rest is up to Bernie and his boys.

thats sort of where i was coming from, bernie and co would pick the cars/drivers people want to see good shots from, so a commercial aspect (like everything in f1) so the 'extra' cameras are the money shots :D

love the pic of jacs! must admit the footage would be good. bit like the BAR footage from the radio controlled helicopter, there was a classic pic of the car with the rc chopper next to it on the BAR site.
(if i could post images easily i would post it, plus a few other camera ones, but due to the restrictions here i cant sorry)

i saw an IRL race once(parts of it actually). The onboard footage from the camera on top of the car was great. That camera from one car turned right and showed a second car while it was passing the first one. they were fighting for position. Couldn't this kind of camera be used in F1? or does the FIA have to approve this?
am sure this type of cameras are probably bigger than F1's cameras but it would be great for TV audiences
