Renault R31

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

King Six wrote:The joke is that they have three car companies associated with the team.
Those companies working in different markets.
Lotus - premium sportcars.
Renalt - reasonable priced cars.
Lada - ass cheap cars for ExUSSR countries.

The only intersection is Renault Logan, but even it is slightly more expensive then Lada's cars.

So i guess it's quite ok to have them all on the car.

All joking aside, I think that the appearance of LADA on the F1 sponsorship market should be a boot to VW group to form a Skoda team. I know that Skoda don't have quite the same image as they used to, but having an F1 team would finally put that demon to bed IMO.... Actually scratch that idea, they'd put the prices up again!

Back on topic, surely the CV joints at both ends would get REALLY hot while running, and more so if they start kerb riding thus increasing the angles. Perhaps extra heat being transferred to the wheels wouldn't be such a bad thing, but i can't see the same being true of the differential/gearbox. Perhaps they have indeed somehow worked out a canted differential?

Thinking about it from my rudimentary understanding of a differential, i can't work one out without a seriously flexible crown (if that's what it's called??)

Boullier said yesterday that they never aimed to make fast laps with the soft tires. He also said that the fuel tank was'nt 'empty'. He added that the best lap came naturally.
He also said that Robert is more confortable with the car now, after they worked on the settings a little bit and tried to adapt the car to the Pirellis.
Thats actually true cause Robert after 1.13.1 made 5 or 6 laps more.

Will that make renault easier to be closely followed next year? I generally think that longer exhaust pipes decrease engine performance, by the way... so the deal must have been relevant.
"The thinking behind that is to feed as much good-quality air as possible to the rear-lower mainplane and the floor of the car. We want to get the rear-end working as well as possible following the loss of performance caused by the banning of the double-diffuser." Tim Goss, McLaren.
