With Renault being the team that introduced and pushing for a engine freeze, would this mean by 2008 renault will just want to be a engine manufacturer and sell off the team?

But I don't think that's what Renault has in mind. The 2008 regulations stipulate that "a major car manufacturer may not directly or indirectly supply engines for more than two teams of two cars each without the consent of the FIA."
Renault is pushing for an engine freeze because they have the best combination of reliabilty and power on the grid (and who wouldn't want to have that guaranteed for three years?) and they want to save money (the company's sales continued to slip throughout Europe last year, except in Spain, even though they won the WDC and WCC).
Well I read some time ago that Alonso went to Mac because Renault are going to leave F1 - I think Stoddart, Coles or Tost said that. So it backs you opinion that they may only provide engines by 2008.

Carlos Ghosn, renault CEO and former Nissan CEO, has been saying that F1 is a really expensive sport and he'll just keep giving the f1 team money as long they keep winning. He has been ruling renault since since 2005 and he doesn't have long term long-term commitment to the sport. So maybe those doubts about the team future are really the reasons Alonso had already announced his move to McLaren.
