Incorrect. The time was set on what looked like a proper qualy sim, i.e. a one lapper. In fact, all of his sub 1.22 min laps were done on one lap stints.

The Red Bull and Ferrari best laps have been done on longer stints of 4 or 5 laps.

Most analysts are saying Merc has taken a big step up in performance but they are probably still a way off the ultimate pace of those two front runners.

Schu's 1.22.249 lap was set on the second lap of a 5 lap stint. The first lap was 1.23.4, followed by the 1.22.249, then 1.24.3 followed by two more 1.24 laps.

What's your source? I've been following autosport who's doing live timings+reports and they claim otherwise...

From their running commentary:

"Patrick from the Netherlands is following AUTOSPORT Live on his iPad, also from bed, and is also interested in Mercedes' form: "How serious is Michael Schumacher's best time from yesterday? Are they now a true title contender?"

It's too early to say that yet, Patrick. Schumacher's very fast times yesterday did come on clear qualifying simulations: one ultra-quick lap at a time, then back into the pits.

By contrast, Red Bull's fastest times of the week have mostly come at the start of four or five lap runs. So we know the Red Bull can go nearly as fast as the Mercedes and on slightly more fuel. Plus Nick Heidfeld told us earlier this week that he is convinced RBR is still holding something back. And when you hear the Red Bull drivers insist Ferrari is the quicker car, it suggests you can't discount the Italian squad either.

But as Sebastian Vettel put it yesterday, even if Schumacher was running on fumes and the softest tyres available, his Friday lap time was still very impressive. So Mercedes is certainly looking a lot, lot better - but don't get carried away yet."

And also from Friday's running commentary, as the lap was happening:

"10:12 Schumacher and Heidfeld come back out.

10:13 That was a single flying lap from Alonso, whose returns to the pits.

10:14 We've got Mercedes' Norbert Haug coming up to join us on AUTOSPORT Live this afternoon, so email your questions to live@autosport.com.

10:15 Schumacher knocks Alonso off the head of the times with a 1m21.268s.

10:15 That Mercedes lap is 0.836s quicker than the time Ferrari just did.

10:16 It's half a second quicker than anyone has gone in Barcelona testing so far.

10:16 That will be a low-fuel run from Schumacher, who comes straight back into the pits.

10:16 But whatever the specification, that time will be very encouraging."

It was on the live updated lap timer here: http://f1tests.mine.nu/2011_1.php?rev=on

Schu did indeed run 3 or 4 one lap shots where he immediately pitted after, but in his final qualy practice stint he was out for 5 laps as I described and set his fastest time on the second lap. The other 1.22.2 lap was set earlier on a two or three lap run if I remember right. Remember he set 2 separate 1.22.2 laps

You do realise that a 1.22 min lap time is a almost a second slower than his best and the test's best, yes?

maybe he missed the chicane or what?

edit. This time later was deleted, so he apparently missed it.

Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

Perhaps you're right there as this time was not recorded, but rather the 1.21.268 time was. hmm. well they didn't report what he did their either way. mystery solved. I'll assume he dodged a chicane as this time was not recorded

Yeah I'm confused now too as some sites are showing 1.21.249 as fastest time whilst others have the 1.21.268. Perhaps he was using a set of left over Bridgestones on that stint because those consecutive lap times don't seem to fit the characteristics of the Pirellis?

Thats pretty ridiculous. Why would they waste even one lap testing on tyres (that they have to return after every race so couldn't really have spares) and that are not this years tyres? Its just a waste of precious testing time....

I'm afraid not. Perez set his time on the super softs. Anything saying otherwise is misguided. Teams have not been giving out any information on what tyres they're using at any time, understandably. Teams will have sets of tyres from previous tests they can use. It is testing, afterall, and you can do whatever you want.
As for this "New Old Wing" business you are seriously out of your head now mate. Small similarities yes, but that's where it ends.
I'm afraid not sunshine. It's a 2009 Brawn front wing with an additional inboard element - and it's taken them two years of development to get there. It is what it is. Read Scarbs's article for the lowdown. They haven't even been using it much.

Come off it Giblet, cut the nonsense. We're all now supposed to think everything is hunky dory based on a morning's worth of laptimes set on nothing but short runs? I think we can do better than that here, can't we?

Mercedes now confidently claim that all of their upgrades are on their car, which mainly consists of a re-positioned exhaust and a modified Brawn 2009 front wing (which they didn't even end up using), and they do nothing but single lap qualifiers as well as five lap runs with it so we can compare absolutely nothing. Nothing with what other teams are doing and particularly nothing with their previous performance. Then they confidently proclaim that they've gained a ton of time overnight and you've even got some Mercedes people throwing out soundbites where they now think they're the third or even second fastest team? Pull the other one.

From what I've heard Schumacher cut a chicane and that's why his .249 was struck off. I'm puzzled by that because it's testing and there are no such stipulations as far as I know, so where did the lap go? It's a bit of a puzzle.

Seg ...it´s not Schu used a different track the whole day. It´s also not like RedBull did all their quick laps during ten lap stints. It´s also not very telling that RedBull ran out of their contigent of soft rubber...-so they were not trying a little bit? -
Fact is Schumacher lapped consistantly at the top and nobody could or wanted to match those times.End of story.
My two cents:Give Schumacher a sniff at a race win and he will deliver. He may be a cheater and without any true talent but anyways..

The updates I have seen are:
New sidepods
New engine cover
New floor
New diffuser
New bargeboards
New turning vanes on the side of the sidepods
New exhaust
New foils under the nose
New horizontal splitter under the nose
New brake ducts
New starter hole positioning
New on-board camera housing position

So nothing really, right?

And a new front wing although the drivers seem to prefer the old one, and have gone back to it. So maybe it was not quite as bad as many (and me included) thought. Maybe the lack of pace of the Merc last year was not due to the FW but to the rest of the car.
Because right now they've changed everything BUT the FW and it seems quite quick...
