No Angel: The Secret Life of Bernie E. - Is it all made up?

Post

Sorry to re-open this topic. The previous was locked up because some forum members got too excited and turned it into an Alonso bashing thread. But now I came across two articles about that book that stroke me:

http://www.pitpass.com/fes_php/pitpass_ ... t_id=43093

http://www.pitpass.com/fes_php/pitpass_ ... t_id=43103

According to those articles, the book is a crap and contain plenty of inaccuracies, made up stories, etc., etc.

Unfortunately, so is Pitpass!

I'll reserve judgement until I either read it or I hear from someone who has read it.

...

I have that book and I am quite happy with it also I already noticed that it lacks some dates when the actual happening took place. I thought this would be a special German habit to demand exact dates but now I can consider it a lack of good journalist work. If he really messed it up with wrong facts then its very sad because it could be a really good one. I just regret that the guy will get the money for delivering poor work.
However I can’t tell if there are real mistakes in the book.

Can we maybe make a list of mistakes so we get a better judgement of actual facts?

I believe mods try to make people think.

For example, I think Pitpass is filled with bitterness.

I think the only requirement to work at Pitpass is that you have a blind illogical hatred of MrE. I believe this book shows MrE in a favorable light so Pitpass won't like it one little bit.

Maybe there is some mistakes in the book but obviously, pitpass journalists do not understand what they read and wrote a lot of BS too.

1/ In march 2006, CVC bought the stakes of SLEC they didn't own (14%) for $478m as written in the document the author provide. $1.7billion is the total investessment of the group during the year.
In the end of 2005, CVC bought the Ecclestone shares, the Bayerische Landesbank shares and the JPMorgan shares for nearly $2.5 billion.
So the total cost is about $2.9 billion.
Bower is right.

2/ Paddy McNally is Irish-born but given the article speaking of him on the Internet, he seems to have the british nationality.
Bower seems to be right.

3/ He claims that Bower don't know what a V1 is. But Bower is right on his explanation : a V1 is a rocket with wing, not a pilotless aircraft. And here the explanation of the last seconds of a V1 flight.
Before launch, the counter was set to a value that would reach zero upon arrival at the target in the prevailing wind conditions. As the missile flew, the airflow turned the propeller, and every 30 rotations of the propeller counted down one number on the counter. This counter triggered the arming of the warhead after about 60 km (37 mi).[8] When the count reached zero, two detonating bolts were fired. Two spoilers on the elevator were released, the linkage between the elevator and servo was jammed and a guillotine device cut off the control hoses to the rudder servo, setting the rudder in neutral. These actions put the V-1 into a steep dive.[9][10] While this was originally intended to be a power dive, in practice the dive caused the fuel flow to cease, which stopped the engine. The sudden silence after the buzzing alerted listeners of the impending impact.
Obviously he never received a V1 blast in his face and Bower is right. Again.

I'll be looking for several feedback on the book and maybe I would buy it...

What I have read so far I don't know if it shows him in a favourable light.
There are many little stories showing how he acts in business. Most people want everything and everybody to be “clean” today. So they might raise some critic now. I just enjoy reading it because it shows what kind of man he is to achieve what he did. Well it is obvious anyway that you don't become that rich without playing some tricks

I don't know all these details so can't judge if those facts are right or wrong. But the bit about Frank Williams can be easily checked. MEP, is it really in the book? Also the bit about Alonso asking to fuel LH's car short?

Until now I just read it up to page 92 so I can’t say anything about Hamilton or Alonso.
The bit about Williams is really in the book. I found it on page 84:

"The drama guaranteed huge interest although the cheers turned to jeers when Lauda, fearing a crash in torrential rain and creeping darkness, retired from the race and immediately headed for the airport. To his surprise, the rain suddenly stopped and Frank Williams ordered his drivers to allow Hunt to pass, so that a Briton could win the world championship.”

Im reading it (spanish translation) and really I dont care about small accuracies, because I believe many of the stories "ideas" are true: Bernie is a skillfull money-grubber and a SOB. I can admire some of it, but also think its kinda sad the way he lived his family life.
