Renault R31

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The endplate is a bit simpler isn't it?

The leading edge / heat shield seems to be a removable panel which can be changed very quickly; maybe they have 2-3 versions per weekend since they do not have to change the whole floor, but only the small fast connecting panel on the leading edge.

This shape in the bottom picture sems much more aggressive than the one run in melbourne

EDIT:
And this FW is new, as the element connecting the flaps is different (smaller). Also endplates are different:

Let me ask, when one upright fails, then the other one has to support all the load of the front. Which, given they're designed to the limit, would make it fail. As it happenned with the Toro Rosso, one fails almost instantly the other does.

Why, in the case of Renault, only one failed, twice?

Suspension uprights have to be able to cope with all the stresses and strains of going over bumps at high speed. These stresses and strains, must be enormous compared to the stress of taking double the static weight of the car.

Well those are two different failures. In the case of Torro Rosso the upright structurally collapsed, as in the hubs were separated from the uprights to create the problem.

In this example, it looks to me (just based on studying the in car replays frame by frame and it's subsequent damage) like something loosened up and machined into the inner part of the wheels. Petrov's incident started with sudden loss of pressure in the tire and the inner part of the wheel being detached from most of the rim. Quick Nick was fortunate really that his ass'y just locked up. So based on what I've seen it looks like a bolt, etc backed out or stripped out of the upright an interfered with the wheel. So in effect an upright failure but not a collapse.

Renault has blamed a material batch for the failures suffered by its drivers during practice for the Malaysian Grand Prix.

[..]

"We quickly established that the two failed items had come from the same material batch and that nothing from this batch had run prior to today," said technical director James Allison.

"It took a little longer to rule out other potential causes but once we were confident that the failures were related to a material problem we released the cars for the second half of afternoon practice where they ran without problem."

Renault sure seems to have the best aero department these days, excluding RB. Those things are a true work of art. The bottom end plate is just such a wonder ..

It's very nice to see that the guys at Enstone are getting back to the level they were in the mid 00's in terms of development.
