Renault R31

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

What's the exit above the exhaust here. It almost looks like a camera bount... but it seems to be open at the end.

Are you referring to the open ended carbon tubes? If so they are crash structures.

Now we can really see how that exhaust exit is pointed down to the track surface and it's also interesting to see how it curves up in the radiator area.

Great pic!

BTW what is the rectangular pad?

In studying those photos a bit more it also like there is a balance tube between the two exits. usually that adds torque at the expense of RPM but since the RPMs are limited anyways ..

BR-> if you refer to the rectangular box above the exhaust and to the right, that looks like a KERS battery to me...

In P1 we just got a really nice shot of the renault exhaust in the wet – it would appear that it does cause some evaporation on the track – each time it blows out a cylinder full you see a little puff of steam a little downstream of the exhaust exit.

But...
1) No where near enough to dry the track – calculations by people above prove accurate :)
2) Not in front of the rear wheels – out to their sides a little – I'm pretty surprised by how much they seem to be blowing the gas out the side of the car rather than under it.

It was great to see it working. There also seemed to be an occasional extra spurt that sent the water spray far further.

Thanks for the pictures. I had to go to my university at the morning and was able to see only the last half of an hour of the practice.
